Guest guest
I made my first batch of echinacea, used the two common herbs, made it strong, and strained it 3 times and it still came out cloudy dark brown. The store bought one is clear. Is this normal? Anyone have the same problem? thanks Take good care and have a great day. Guest guest
That's the way it's supposed to look hon. It simply means you have some of the plant matter in there which is good. The store bought stuff is ultra strained and is no where near as good as what you just made. Guest guest
My echinacea was made from the whole plant, two year growth. It's really nice and dark and potent. A clear tincture? Can't imagine. Blessings, Janet E.

Guest guest
For one the store bought one has really very little herbs in it! Color is a good thing! Guest guest
Tinctures are far more potent than most capsules....(are you referring to capsules bought? or the homemade kind)... Also check the files on the list - there is a file on tinctures... Suzi nkbaker2001 wrote: Elise, do you feel that a tincture is more powerful than taking herbs in capsules? Would you mind giving that tincture formula again? How much vodka to herbs? Also do you have a problem with brain dysfunction? I'm starting to have some real bad memory problems. I don't suppose there's any miracle fix for that? Kathe

I have read that one tablespoon of tincture is about the same as 4 capsules of herbs. It is more concentrated but not necessarily stronger in the way you may be thinking. Guest guest
Kathe, Oh yes I do have the memory troubles but they are not as bad since I have been taking Gingko everyday along with breathing/meditations. That really helps me. Also I find that reading and keeping a little notebook with me really helps. But the Hops/Passionflower tincture I make I really don't have an exact amount but I put about 1/2 cup hops and 1/2 cup passionflower then cover completely with vodka (higher the proof the better) Make sure the herbs are covered really well then I shake every day and leave in my herb cupboard (which is dark) for 8 weeks. I find the longer it goes the stronger. I find that tinctures when placed under the tounge go into the system much faster then waiting for capsules to dissolve. The tinctures goes through the blood stream when placed under the tounge and held there for around 30 secs. I know the taste is really hard to get used to at first but now I don't even notice. I have to say tinctures work much better for me. Elise I hope this helps. <<<<snipped>>>> do you feel that a tincture is more powerful than taking herbs I'm starting to have some real bad memory problems. Guest guest
Anne this is an answer Doc gave months ago from the files.... also note that some herbs do not do well with glycerine... The reason I never use Glycerine is because it does not have very good catalytic qualities and therefore hinders absorbtion. Both alcohol and apple cider vinegar are excellent catalysts and get the biochemical properties of the herbs where they need to go FAST! Hope this helps ;o) Garden <garden wrote: I make a tincture and usually add vegetable glycerin after 6 weeks in the alcohol. I see here on the files that glycerin is not recommended, just curious why not? Thanks anne h Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Guest guest
Alcohol tinctures will last about 10 years depending on climate and such. Vinegar tinctures and glycerin tinctures should be changed yearly I believe. Guest guest
TINCTURES Plant constituents are generally more soluble in alcohol than water, so tinctures are made. They are stronger than infusions or decoctions, so the dosage is 5-15 drops. They can be mixed with water. Drops of the tincture can be added to the bath or used to make an ointment. To make a tincture put 4 oz of dried herbs or 8 oz fresh herbs into a clean jar and pour on one pint of vodka or cider vinegar. Seal and keep in a warm place for two weeks, shaking daily. Strain and store in a dark bottle. ---- retrobren 01/28/05 01:17:56 Hi, I'm New Hello, I have never attempted to make medicine but I would like to learn to make a dandelion tincture.
