Guest guest
I am searching for the original source of the phrase " Healer, Heal Thy Self " . I believed it to be from Jesus in the temple. Can anyone help? -- Barbara Neebel Meier, PEHA, Windemere School of Eastern Healing Arts Breath Teacher Reiki Master Teacher www.windemere.org Barbara
Guest guest
Hi Barbara, I don't think this saying was uttered by Jesus as such. But it was spoken in a jeering tone to him by passer-by's as he was dying on the cross. (See Luke 23:35ff). " He has saved others, let him save himself... " which has been rendered as " Healer heal thyself " in some translations (see also the parallel passage in Matthew 27:39ff and Mark 15:29ff. They asked that he come down from the cross to prove his power. That is a very human request, but I do not think accurate in terms of how healing works. Buddhists would say that our wounds make our hearts grow in compassion as we receive them and -in a sense embrace them. Christians, such as Henri Nouwen (and Carl Jung before him) talk about the concept of the " Wounded Healer " . I think that is a concept that exists in other mythologies as well. Modern medicine does not do much for chronic conditions such as angioedema or chronic muscle pains. I have found some of the frameworks of oriental medicine to be of help. I am interested especially in the idea of balance. By the way, I am one of those people who reads her mail on the web- page and is set to no-mail... Caroline, some of us do this because it is an easier way to keep our mail sorted... not all of us no-mailers have mercenary or other questionable intent. , Barbara Neebel Meier <Barbara@w...> wrote: > I am searching for the original source of the phrase " Healer, Heal Thy > Self " . Guest guest
Hi Barbara, I think the original phrase is " Physician, heal thyself " . Jesus said - in Luke 4:23 - " He said to them, you will doubtless quote me the proverb, " Physician heal yourself " .... " So, it appears that someone said this before Jesus. Got the phrase below from website with Latin Maxims - http://user.tninet.se/~dfr732s/auct.html#hier Medice, cura te ipsum! Physician, heal thyself!
