Guest guest
Great article Crystal! It's mention of brain cells near a head injury " committing suicide " makes me wonder if that is the brain's mechanism for making room for the swelling and healing of the injured cells. It makes sense that if full emergency intervention were practiced in such a case (as happened with my mother a couple years ago), the brain would need to kill more of its cells because the swelling of injured cells would be more extensive, hence need more room to heal. Guest guest
An interesting theory, but I'm not sure I agree. It seems to me that, while dead, the cell bodies would still be present. Also, the toxic by-products of cell death would probably accelerate regional damage. I've actually wondered if this is the body's way of dealing with what in the natural world would most likely be a fatal injury. A sort of self-administered coup de grace, if you will. > " Susette Horspool " <susinv > > >Re: Digest Number 404 >Wed, 18 Oct 2000 21:16:31 -0700 > >Great article Crystal! > >It's mention of brain cells near a head injury " committing suicide " makes >me >wonder if that is the brain's mechanism for making room for the swelling >and >healing of the injured cells.
