Guest guest
Just got this newsletter this morning. It's too long to include the whole thing, but I did want to share the panic attack remedy. The newsletter originates in Australia and they don't have the same slang words we use. Read the whole thing, it's not a spoof! Power Tips - November 2000 - The Electronic Journal for the New Psychotherapies Thu, 9 Nov 2000 04:31:31 +0800 " Christine Sutherland " <Christine excerpt... How to Stop a Panic Attack in its Tracks - The F.A.R.T (Fast Automatic Release Technique) Protocol (Developed by The Lifeworks Group) There are many different ways to use this protocol, depending upon what is practicable considering your or your client's internal state. In reading and using the protocol, we'd like you to keep in mind two points we consider important to get across to you: 1 As Gary Craig says, " We are on the ground floor of a healing high-rise. " We are only just beginning to see the possibilities and every one of us has something to contribute. Please don't just accept and copy what others have done. Please ask yourself, " How can this be simplified? " , " How can this work even faster or better? " In developing FART , we were presented with a problem and instead of using a set technique already in existence, we asked ourselves which of our many tools and pieces of knowledge could be applied to give the fastest, deepest, most permanent resolution we could imagine. Creativity does not belong to just a few! 2 The acronym FART was what we consider a happy accident. Creativity is enhanced by humour and in our opinion there is far too much seriousness in the field of mental health. It is well and truly time for a change. At our clinic we have the motto " To Heal with Joy " and we absolutely mean that. In every case, we look for ways to heal with laughter if that can be at all appropriate. Even in very tragic cases, laughter can be the key that unlocks the potential for healing. When we add laughter to something as powerful as the new psychotherapies, therapy rocks! Shortened FART as used for Panic Attacks 1 One hand in TAT pose front of face only. Here we use the thumb and third finger placed in the crease of the eyelid either side of the nose and just above the tear duct. The middle finger sits on the forehead at about the 6th chakra (between eyebrows and up a bit). The two points either side of the nose are supposedly where every meridian in the body intersects and enters the brain - so we are stimulating every meridian with this pose. 2 Other hand used to tap crown point. This is done continuously and you may need to vary the speed for individuals. The crown point stimulates every yang meridian in the body. If you want to also separately stimulate every yin meridian in the body, you could tap inside a wrist or ankle (3 fingers up from the wrist, or about 4 fingers up from the ankle). Keep in mind we get every point in step 1, and this is just a " double whammy " . 3 Just be with the panic attack and allow yourself to feel all the usual yuck stuff. If you can manage it, think dichotomous thoughts " I'm dying, I'm the most alive person on the planet, I'm dying, I'm the most alive person on the planet " As a clinician, you can be speaking these aloud for the client, so he/she can simply " be with " the attack. You can also be the one tapping on the crown while the client holds the TAT pose to the face. It seems important for the person not to consciously " try " to stop the attack (eg trying to breathe differently or use a relaxation technique). We're not teaching a person how to " cope " with attacks, we're working to eliminate them altogether! In writing about the use of TAT, Tapas Fleming comments that we are saying " yes " to what we had previously said " no " to. Dichotomous thought overlaps and supports this " saying yes " . We believe this process sets up confusion in the brain, aided by the stimulation of the points. If the brain really does operate according to dynamical systems theory (as in quantum physics) as many are starting to think, this makes great sense. Susan Courtney first drew my attention to this. Part of dynamical systems theory is along the lines that if we induce confusion/chaos/entropy in a system, then the system will collapse and simultaneously leap to the next logical level of organisation. In turn this leads me to consider NLP's neurological levels and the assertion that work at one level impacts on every level which it contains (see Dilts, Robert, for a better exposition). Also, in NLP we say that a problem cannot be solved at the same level at which it was created. We must go at least one level up for a solution. I hold that in going one level up (or more), the solution automatically takes over and the problem ceases to exist. The Full FART Protocol This is used to locate and eliminate the originating event which has lead to a complex or deep-seated problem. We simply ask the unconscious mind to take us back to the originating event which led to the problem, even though it may seem irrelevant to my unconscious mind. Once there, don't try to find the " link " or association, simply look for a belief or comment which arises from the event and dichotomise that over and over. You will know you have the right event when it produces perhaps unexpected emotion (eg, the emotions of a child rather than of you, now)and as you make dichotomous statements about that event, you may have a rush of heat up the body and into the head and face. Continue the dichotomous statements until you have cooled. ______ _______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
