Guest guest
Deal all, I just got an urgent e-mail from a good friend seeking holistic treatments for snoring - ruining a new relationship. I have no clue. Help. Thank you. Cynthia
Guest guest
Cynthia-- Holistic treatments are wonderful and easy to implement (sewing a marble in the back of the sleeper's collar to insure that s/he is not sleeping on their back is one that quickly comes to mind). However...snoring can be a symptom of sleep apnea, which can be a dangerous and even deadly problem. You might want to suggest that your friend's partner see a physician to rule out anything more serious first. My husband has severe obstructive apnea (snores like a freight train!!!) and uses a CPAP machine to help him breathe freely during the night. It's a bit unsightly, and it took a some getting used to, but it is a blessing because it keeps him breathing freely. There are at least two other people on this list who have apnea. I'm sure that they will also have some suggestions for your friend. Best, Florie * * * * * * * * * * Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger. I have sleep apnea as does my husband and although the gear take a bit of getting used to, I wouldn't trade mine for anything. Sleeping on the side or on the stomach does help reduce snoring hence the marble or tennis ball sewn into the pajamas in the back. For some people wearing those strips that go across your nose to keep your sinuses open help. You don't mention if this friend is overweight...weight has in some cases a lot to do with developing sleep apnea and a reduction in weight will solve the problem. You also don't mention if there are allergies...if there are and they result in swollen nasal passages this can create snoring. A proper prescription or herbal antihistamine/decongestant should allieviate the problem. Take care however in using herbal treatments for this...follow the dosage instructions carefully. Many herbal decongestants can raise blood pressure (OC and prescription can too but the doctor should evaluate to make sure this is not a problem). Also if the snoring seems to be related to the sinuses clogging at night, regular lavaging of the sinuses with a Neti (spelling?) pot might be another option. Hope all this helps. Guest guest
re: snoring..... mix lavendar and eucalyptus with a little almond carrier oil, and burn in the bedroom about an hour or two before going to bed. The lavendar helps the sleep and the eucalyptus helps keep the airways clear which cn prevent snoring.....believe me, I have a husband who can snore for England!!!! this does work for us. Guest guest
Dear Florrie and Ruth, Florrie, what's a CPAP machine? Thank you for your response. I've forwarded it on. There was mail the first week I d about responding to you off line if interested in trance work. I'm interested, but deleted your address. My email is: cjohnson Ruth, you wrote " mix lavendar and eucalyptus with a little almond carrier oil, and burn in the bedroom about an hour or two before going to bed. " I'm sorry for being so dumb, but do you mix dry herbs in the oil and light it in an incense burner? I've used homeopathics and herbs in teas, but not am not well versed in other modalities. Thank you both so much for the suggestions. This would be funny if it didn't sound so serious. cynthia

Guest guest
Hi, Cynthia! A CPAP (or CPAC) machine is basically a " breathing machine " for those with obstructive sleep apnea. It forces a stream of air into the nostrils of those who might stop breathing without it. This is a really simplistic explanation, and I'm hoping that one of the listmembers who has used one might be able to explain it better. It's kind of cumbersome (and sleeping next to someone hooked up to a mask and a hose can be pretty disconcerting at first), it's a real help. It's changed my husband's life--he no longer falls asleep behind the wheel of his car or in the middle of working with a client! The group doing the trance/telepathy experiments is called Parahypnosis -- it's an interesting group of people...psychics, skeptics, and everything in between. We're just about done discussing the results of last week's pendulum experiment, and are about to start designing a new group experiment for this weekend. Come and play, if you'd like--several folks from Bodymind are contributing. Best, Florie * * * * * * * * * * Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger. They are a ceramic pot that looks like Aladdin's lamp and are used to lavage the sinus cavities. I have never used one so would it would be difficult for me to explain, however, someone and perhaps they can chime in uses one regularly and would be better able to explain how to properly use one. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure. It works by keeping a continuous stream of air blowing through either a mask which covers the nose or a mask with nostril pillow which fit directly into the nostrils, thereby keeping the air passages open. To obtain a CPAP, it must be determined that you have sleep apnea by means of a sleep study. The sleep study is usually done as an outpatient either at the hospital or a sleep study center. It consists of spending the night hooked up to various monitoring devices that measure everything from your heart rate to breathing patterns to brain waves. It determines if you have sleep apnea, which type obstructive or central (some people have both) and how severe it is. If it is determined that you have sleep apnea, your doctor will discuss treatment options with you. If it is mild in nature and weight may be a contributing factor, a simple weight reduction plan may be all that is in order. If this is not the case, depending upon the severity, your doctor may prescribe a CPAP or a BiPAP. If this is the option, you will usually have another sleep study done in order to titrate the pressure needed to keep your air passages open. Once that is done, your doctor will prescribe the appropriate machine and air pressure settings. The CPAP can be obtained from a durable medical equipment company that specializes in respiratory equipment. It may take a bit of time to get used to wearing the mask but once you have gotten the first few nights of restful sleep, trying to sleep without it will be the last thing on your mind. It does truly make a difference that is immediately noticeable. They usually prescribe the type mask that covers the nose to start with...if you find that you are not tolerating it well or are having difficulty with air leaking from the mask, discuss the option of nasal pillows with your doctor. I was unable to use the typical triangluar mask as it leaked air into my eyes even with the smallest size, so I now have a mask that uses nasal pillows and it works perfectly. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I have used a neti pot and also something I like even more called a Grossan nasal irrigator (http://www.pharmacy-solutions.com/) - it's an attachment that you attach to a water pik. Both take some getting used to but make a big difference in nasal congestion. Also reducing or eliminating dairy in your diet.... Just a few sites with info on neti pots: http://www.scand-yoga.org/english/shop/uk_neti.html http://www.itppeople.com/store/ceramic.htm For more info on various ways of dealing with allergies, asthma, and other breathing difficulties: http://64.37.202.203/board/Noncgi/Forum4/HTML/000015.html Best wishes, MichelleH

Guest guest
Dear all, My friend with the snoring problem wrote the following. I think she's trying to do the eucalyptus and lavender at night. I sent her all the responses you sent. She lives in the middle of nowhere, has no support system, and doesn't know where to start. Would someone be willing to spell out step by step something that's burned in almond oil? This may seem trivial, but this is a lady who is starting along a long-neglected path. Thanks in advance, cynthia johnson >>Thank you for all the responses on the snoring situation. I can't seem to find the oil for the potpourri, it seems that no one here carries anything like that or knows anything about it, I am even trying on the Internet but can't seem to put in the right thing to find out what I want to.>> PS She's in Sioux Falls, S. Dak.

Dak. On the internet, the best place I know of to purchase essential oils is from Kamala. Just have her do a search on any of the major search engines using the word Kamala. I know the woman who runs the business and have bought from her before. She studied the oils while living overseas where she made contacts with the people who actually produce them so everything she imports is of the highest quality. If I were going to use the oil combination that you describe, I would purchase an aromatherapy diffuser. These can be very inexpensive or very expensive depending upon what she chooses. The simplest ones are clay or ceramic and have a bowl at the top where the oil is placed and a tea candle is set in the bottom under the bowl. The flame heats the oil which is diffused into the air. The expensive models are usually electric and are made to hold the entire bottle of oil in some cases and diffuse specific amounts into the air at prescribed intervals. Kamala usually carries the simplest type of diffuser. To find the more expensive variety...have her do a search using the following words...diffuser,essential oil. That should give her a variety of products to choose from. Hope this helps.
