Guest guest
Hi Folks: Well, I just wanted to make a comment on the article about Manek, and a couple of other things, but mostly about this comment: > The method of becoming a solar cooker is quite simple. According to Manek, > you start by looking straight into the rising morning sun for only a few > seconds. Slowly you increase the time to minutes reaching up to 30 to 35 > minutes. " If you do it gradually, your eyes will not be damaged and help in > charging your brain with solar energy. " While most of the article sounds pretty viable, I would NEVER tell anyone to stare at the sun, even for a minute... it can cause irreparable damage to the retina and lead to blindness! You cannot even look at the sun during a full eclipse safely because there is still a corona and the possibility of burning your retinas. You can lie in the sun, bask in the sun, use solar panels to collect it, whatever, but don't look directly at the sun. Ever. I saw this guy on TV the other day... and yes, those guys can do pretty remarkable things with their metabolisms, even being buried alive and sitting on nails, and apparently staring at the sun and starving, but I can't see the relevance for encouraging others to try it. This is very reckless advice. I don't see any research to the effect that he has done successful experiments proving staring at the sun is not damaging to anyone else's retinas. It is not like a tan, you can't build up a tolerance and get " used " to it. There is no melanin in the eyes, or UV blocking ability. Why do people need to wear welding goggles or sunglasses, then? ********************************************************** Quick segue... about the salt. You are more likely to lose electrolytes from the bowel than anywhere else, especially if you have absorption problems or diarrhea, or you abuse laxatives and enemas. Sports drinks are generally way to strong, even if you are electrolyte depleted, and if taken at all should be diluted with water. If a person is vomiting or has diarrhea they are usually better off with minimal intake for a day or two unless they are at high risk for dehydration; a short fast will allow the system to clear without being washed out. I have worked at a lot of bike runs and marathons at the pit stops... we offer slightly cool (not cold) water, juice, and segments of fruit (usually oranges and bananas) to the athletes. It is the potassium that is the problem normally more than the sodium loss; the potassium loss can lead to cramping in the legs and other problems. If the fluids are too cold or have concentrated sugars (like colas or sports drinks) they will cause bowel cramping and a " washout " of even more electrolytes. -- Blessings, Crow " Look for Rainbows in the Darkness " -- --- Rev.
