computer virus

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified

by Microsoft (

www.microsoft.com ) and by

McAfee (www.mcafee.com ) as the most destructive ever!

This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine

has yet been developed.

This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital

information for its

functioning are stored.

This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically

to all contacts on your

list

with the title " A Virtual Card for You " . As soon as the supposed virtual

card is opened, the

computer freezes so that the user

has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are

pressed, the virus destroys

Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in

just a few hours this

virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast

by CNN (www.cnn.com ). This alert was received by an employee of

Microsoft itself. So don't

open any mails with subject A Virtual Card for You " . As soon as you get the

mail, delete it.

Please pass on this mail to all your friends.

It is irresponsible to forward virus warnings that you don't even bother to

check out yourself. There is no mention ANYWHERE on ANY of the 3 listed

websites about this virus. This suggests that the virus is a HOAX.

From now on, please have the courtesy for your fellow listmembers to check

these things out before you forward them.

I apologize for the harsh tone of this message, but people who try to help,

but can't be bothered to check their sources put us all in danger.

Having had troubles with e-mail viruses in the past, I would much rather be

forewarned of one that (thankfully) turns out to be a hoax than to go through

the time and trouble of experiencing another.

I was not all offended by the fact that it may or may not be a hoax. Thanks,

Kristin, for your consideration.

Lady Shimmy and others that may have felt the same way,

A thousand humble pardons (and lashes with a wet noodle) for having offended

you to such depth.

I sent this out last night just before I was logging off and going to bed.

Was it careless of me to send it out w/out verifying it's validity? Was I

putting all of you in danger because I didn't check it out? I didn't think

so. But then, when I sent it out, I had a splitting headache and felt

awful. I have been getting virus detections at LEAST once a day with my

Norton System 2000 software at LEAST once a day for the last 2 weeks and

although this particular virus hasn't come through my email yet, I am

currently fully aware of the virus problems running rampant.

I don't agree that if it's not listed on the sites that it isn't a " true " .

It took many sites at least a week to post the particular virus that I keep

flagging on my pc on their sites! Better to be forewarned for potential

problems than rely on the

notion that " if it's not documented somewhere it CAN'T be true " . If this

virus is in fact a hoax, there really isn't any harm done (other than your

having taken a few minutes to check it out). BUT, if it is true (regardless

of whether it is documented on some site) .... it's a little extra

precaution. Consider it a heightened sense of awareness.

But then .... again, obviously I did offend at least 1 person in my sense of

caution and desire to forewarn others. And for that I apologize.
