I got a kick out of reading this color story in my online paper today,

especially since you had entitled your earthquake post " Where's Rupert " ...

synchronicity lives!

We lived in the Bay Area in California when I was a child, and I recall the

sort of unsettled elevator feeling you get when there is a tremor or

earthquake. Probably my most humorous memories are of my Southern Belle

mother's irrational insistence in putting up a plate rack all the way around

the dining room, and watching her run in there during a tremor in case one

of her clinking china babies flew off the wall.

Swan rules the roost

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - When one of its residents disappeared in the

waters off this coastal community, the Orange County sheriff's harbor patrol

sent out a helicopter to search. A few miles down the coast, the crew

spotted him - an Australian black swan. Here, residents and visitors cater

to the needs of Rupert, a sometimes ill-tempered fresh water swan who has

become a celebrity in this community of harborfront homes. No one knows for

sure where Rupert came from, but many believe he was left behind by

residents more than six years ago. Although Rupert has made his home in the

salt water harbor, he depends on fresh water to survive. The harbor patrol

carries a bucket of fresh water and occasionally stops to hold it over

the side of the boat so that the swan can take a drink. When the harbor

patrol isn't available, residents come to the bird's aid.
