Guest guest
Anand: This is the crux of the matter... sometimes when I am reading the posts on the list (which are generally unmoderated because of the overall level of professionalism I have noticed in the population here) I see things happening that make me nervous as a nurse and as a list moderator. First off, sometimes people enter the forum not simply to participate but to ask advice, which in most cases they may try to follow. Since that is the case, I prefer that the " signal to noise " ratio is high, in other words, that the advice be sincere, quality advice, not advertisement for products, not " I had a friend who... " as much as personal experience data or research. What we are dealing with is people's wellbeing, their health and happiness. It may seem innocuous to play at being an armchair physician, but believe me, I have been moderating this list for almost two years now, and there are people who take what others say here very seriously, to the point that they may not be as sensible as you would hope they would be. I almost break out in a rash every time someone tells someone else to quit taking their prescription medication, for instance. This is why when anyone writes the list asking for answers I make it manifestly clear that it should be taken as " coffee talk " and not medical advice or guidance. I desired that this list be more focused to the mind and its effects; yes, we will occasionally overlap into talking physical, including diet, exercise, breathing, medications, treatments and alternatives... but I still maintain that I would like the group to focus on the concepts of causation and less on medicinals in this particular forum. I am sure that if you would like to learn more about TCM or homeopathy or aromatherapy or flower essences or herbal medicine or colloidal minerals or a hundred other things there are forums for that. I prefer that discussions not get too bogged down in that because I don't like to endorse any particular treatment, both for my own ethical/legal reasons and for the protection of the members of the forum who might be thinking that the people chatting here are wiser than they are about their own bodies. Though these discussions may and probably will continue here, I simply wanted to be clear that we are all supposed to be here to be working on our own healing, in our own ways. The first step in that is to find our own center and learn to feel for what resonates for us and what doesn't, since what works for you may not work for me, and vice versa. I " know " that everyone here has good intentions, and that being so, I also know that none of you would want someone to be harmed by careless or offhand advice. Mainly I am asking for people to be a bit more circumspect, as PM was in not wanting to poison the waterhole, so to speak, with confusing information. I think that we all know that a little bit of knowledge can be more dangerous, if we act upon it, than complete ignorance, which may prevent us from taking wrong action. Thanks a lot... Caroline PS: I classify SPAM as direct mailing to a list to sell or promote a product or service of your own (that includes classes and other lists), without asking permission from the list moderators... and especially if it is something cross-posted to several lists. It is junk mail, in other words, unsolicited advertising. If you have not been " fussed at " before, then you are probably doing it correctly. If you have a question, forward the post FIRST to -owner and Mani or I will look it over to see if it is all right to be sent along. Most of the time it is, and you'll get the " seal of approval " so to speak ;-) You are also free to put your URL in your signature line, many people do, and as long as it is not ten feet long, it is appropriate. >anand avid <quit > > >Re: Digest Number 526 >Thu, 22 Feb 2001 14:28:14 +0200 > >Dear Caroline >How can I tell everybody about my new approach to therapy without being >outcasted for spaming? >I do have a site with articles, and I wish to share and enrich us all in >more than one way. >IMO it is good to have many ways suggesting healing as well as highlighting >the bodymind issue. >btw I find the herbaltalk enriching especially because I know so little >about it. Guest guest
Caroline, I agree with what you say here - I shutter to think of the advice people take from others about medicines, whether they are from natural sources or not. It's good to learn about our health, but there are so many factors that go into a decision of what to take, especially which other herbs or medications they're taking. The internet is great for education but I share your worry that people may be harming themselves by taking a bit of information and running with it.
