Guest guest
Hi, I think an interesting argument for the body-mind connection in any disease, including diabetes, in the fact that in multiple personality disorder, different personalities have different diseases or lack thereof. I don't know of any research explaining this phenomenon but someone out there may know more that they can share or be interested in researching this for some project. So much to learn---so little time. Celeste
Guest guest
Hi Crow, It is a fascinating disorder. Thanks for the book title. I wasn't familiar with it. I suspect it may be more prevalent than previously suspected but I also think that there are those who have not fully dissociated into a full-blown multiple where the personalities are totally distinct. Theories, theories, theories----the human mind is so fascinating! Oh, I've been meaning to ask you what the significance of your name, Crow, might be. My son identifies with the crow as a symbol of change and finds it very meaningful to him. Peace, Celeste
Guest guest
Hi Crow, That's interesting---thanks for sharing. I thought it must have some personal connotation for you. It must give you a sense of empowerment and identitiy. What a wonderful gift. I'd love to know more about your shamanic healing work. I've been fascinated with it since I read a book by John Sanford called Healing and Wholeness in the 70's. It prepared me for my first bout with treatment for spinal tumors and set me on a new spiritual path. However, I know little more than the average person about how one becomes a shaman. I have always been under the impression that it is a gift that needs to be developed. Can anyone become a shaman? I think of Native Americans primarily and have a dream symbol of a medicine woman that is important to me. It's fun to get to know each other, isn't it? Guest guest
Greetings: This post is the third in the discussion regarding the energy centers or chakras. The Solar Plexus Location: Upper Abdomen, at base of sternum in front, upper lumbar spine Spinal Nerve Plexus: Lumbar spinal ganglion Body Parts: Digestive system, viscera, muscles Sanskrit Name: Manipura Element: Fire Color Vibration: Yellow Keynote Vibration: E Focus: Ego, Power and Will Stones: Yellow Stones (Citrine, Amber, Topaz) Incense: Carnation, Cinnamon Foods: Starches Affirmations: I can! I will! I am capable and worthy. I am powerful. I am in charge. Disorders: Type " A " personality disorders: ulcers, hypertension, anger, heartburn, gastritis; liver and gall bladder dysfunction, diabetes or hypoglycemia, muscular tension and disorders, low back pain, lordosis, passive-aggressive personality, domineering or controlling personality, overcompetitiveness or lack of ambition, loneliness, perfectionism, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, attention deficit disorder. At this level, when our solar plexus is functioning well, we are in touch with our ego, treat it with respect and honor, and acknowledge the ego center of others with the same respect. We value ourselves and our efforts without need for obsession with details. We realize that although we are in charge of our lives, often we are not in control. We understand our feelings of anger as manifestation of our fire energy and learn useful ways to channel the energy back through our system without abusing or punishing ourselves or others. We do not need to find fault or carry guilt. We honor our responsibilities and do not manipulate others to serve our desires. Interestingly, the solar plexus is the seat of the mental level of the aura, and this is the place of our intelligence and motivation. The solar plexus can be blocked or damaged early in life, perhaps through verbal abuse or circumstances that injure our self esteem, or from being raised in a critical or uncertain atmosphere that fosters a desire to " please " and be perfect in order to be loved. Poor function in this area may lead a person to behave aggressively or conversely to play the martyr. Many physical disorders resulting from stress arise here, as well as some neurotic personality disorders. Poor performance in school or behavior problems may result in children, or conversely, the child may be an overachiever who is secretly afraid to fail. In order to keep the solar plexus going strong, we need to support our worthiness and learn to accept our mistakes with equanamity. A good practice is to stand in front of a mirror and compliment ourselves. Begin with a hand mirror or a small mirror, and work up to a full length mirror as you become more comfortable. Stand straight and tall, with your chin up, and look yourself in the eye. Be generous and honest with your praise. Explore your talents and learn to say " thank you " when someone else compliments you. Be proud of your accomplishments, and learn that you can share them with others without bragging. Know that sometimes it is okay to brag ;-) Some of the hardest problems to overcome are internalizing anger, combustible temper, and manipulation of others. Like addictions, these challenges may need to be dealt with " one day at a time " until we can learn constructive methods of handling our fire energy. The fire is good; it keeps us warm and vital. But if we do not tend it carefully, it can either die away or rage out of control. If we are good fire tenders, we are affirming ourselves daily. The traditional Indian correspondance animal for the solar plexus is the Ram. There are a lot of connections between this energy center and the astrological sign of Aries. It may be useful, if you have problems in this area, to read some information about this sign. Guest guest
Anat: I would be hesitant to use the word " cure " in regard to diabetes, since it is considered a chronic disorder without a known cure. However, there can definitely be improvement in health status and stabilization of signs and symptoms with care and maintenance. From a mind-body standpoint, as I mentioned in my previous post, there may be some issues surrounding control, entitlement and self esteem. If there are feelings of deprivation, loss of control, a feeling that somehow they are not " good enough " or " worthy enough " in some way (these feelings may come out as perfectionism, obsessive/compulsive or other overly critical behavior). This person may not feel they deserve to experience happiness, and on a subliminal level they reject the sweetness of life. Stress increases the problem, reducing the body's abilities to cope with increased sugar levels from glycogen breakdown. This person needs to recreate a feeling of worthiness and self esteem that encourages the body to process nutrients appropriately and easily. Hypnosis may help with reducing stress and helping the person release some of the emotional causations of their problem, as well as meditation and relaxation exercises such as biofeedback. Hypnosis may also help with weight loss and for healthy positive dietary and exercise choices. If the solar plexus and/or the third auric level are assessed to be deficient or imbalanced, a person trained in chakra or field therapy can work on those issues; otherwise, working to balance all the chakras so that they are all open and moving, or offering the body energy with a hands on modality such as Reiki, can be helpful. Bear in mind that when a diabetic begins to have bodywork or energy work, their blood sugar may rebound in response; they should check it more regularly and keep a small snack handy just in case. If you work on diabetics regularly, it would not hurt to have some juice or milk on hand, or hard candy, in case they become hypoglycemic. Under no circumstances should a diabetic stop taking their oral medications that stimulate the production of insulin, or stop taking their injectable insulin. If they feel that their condition has improved enough to warrant medication changes, they should work closely with their medical professional to monitor and titer their medications and diet to reflect that. Hope this is helpful. Guest guest
Great, Crow! I read this when you originally posted, but obviously not carefully enough... Not only am I an Aries, but all the issues you describe are ones that have dogged me for ever. And for some years I've had the strong image of having to keep burning, caustic fire energy from erupting from my solar plexus all over anyone too close. I'd better get working! love Arabella
Guest guest
Hmm, Celeste... In last Sunday's Boston Globe there was an article in the Globe Magazine on Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as multiple personality disorder. It seems that the incidence of DID is much higher than is diagnosed, and that the symptoms are not nearly as obvious as the sensational media would have us believe. There is a new book out about the disorder by Martha Stout, " The Myth of Sanity: Divided Consciousness and the Promise of Awareness " . I had heard that what you have speculated can be possible; that a dissociated personality can have its own habits, disorders and problems that may or may not be shared with other personality fragments. Since the role of therapy in DID cases is to assist the person to embrace and reintegrate all parts into one whole being, I wonder how these diversities can be resolved. It seems, as the article says, that when we say someone is behaving " like a different person " , we may be more correct than we know. Guest guest
Celeste: Thanks for asking, hope this is not too wordy an answer... Well, there are a couple of reasons I'm called Crow, actually. The first is related to my inability as a child to pronounce my own name... Caroline had too many syllables, I suppose... in my child dialect, it was " Croline " , which became Crow/Caro. So I was already Crow when I started doing shamanic healing work about a decade ago, but it came as no surprise when I had my first power animal retrieval to feel the familiar feathered presence being blown into my crown by my partner. In order to fully honor my animal guide I started doing research on corvines, and I have to admit I've fallen in love with them, their intelligence and fortitude, even their role as mighty tricksters and fanciers of shiny things. Did you know they are members of the songbird family? If hand raised, they can speak as well as parrots (perhaps Poe really did have a Raven who quoth " Nevermore " ;-) Crows nest high in trees, are very familial and tribal, and are fairly difficult to catch. Their feathers have an iridescent sheen; in the Native tale of the rainbow crow, that is how you can tell that underneath the dark surface, there is a manificently colored bird! The following summer I had a vision quest in northern Arizona, and on my return, was blessed with the medicine name Rainbow Crow Daughter. After some subsequent time and journeywork I felt led to call myself Rainbow Crow Woman rather than Daughter, and that is who I have been ever since. There must be some " RC " connection with me somehow, since my birth name is Ruth Caroline, and my medicine name is Rainbow Crow. But you can call me Crow :-) " Look for Rainbows in the Darkness " ! >celeste m sullivan <csull3 >Hi Crow, > >Oh, I've been meaning to ask you what the significance of your name, >Crow, might be. Guest guest
Hi Celeste: I think the path of shamanism is a certainly a specialized path, but it is not necessarily inaccessible to anyone who feels led or called to it. Many times, a person is called to shamanism by way of a physical or emotional crisis or breakthrough (don't like the word breakdown!); coming out the other side may take the form of a spiritual awakening that starts a person on the path. In other cases, there is a hereditary aspect to shamanism, or a religious/cultural one. In my case, I had a series of personally significant " breakthroughs " , including a journey in which I was symbolically dismembered and reassembled by one of my guides. This was before I knew much about shamanism except for the exotic indiginous idea of it, and did not think it was something I would naturally aspire to. What I have discovered is that most world cultures have a form of indiginous shamanism, even if it has been repressed or forgotten over time, and that there is a sort of resonance in each of us when we rediscover those roots, even if we do not carry those beliefs in this lifetime. I have been blessed to work with some wonderful Native people as well as taking several classes with the Foundation for Shamanic Studies. A shaman " walks between the worlds " to help or heal; a person who is aware and conversant with multiple levels of reality risks becoming ungrounded and appearing " crazy " many times to people, and also risks taking on the issues of others if they are not skilled at clearing themselves properly. It is a more yang, masculine, assertive, whatever term you like to use method of healing than a lot of energy work, because there is a strong role for the shaman in helping the client restore lost power and soul fragments, perform divination, and remove intrusions or spiritual attachments and curses. I personally believe that the client has a strong role, that they must be willing to participate on many levels in order for treatment to be successful. I think for a general overview of shamanism, you can't beat Mircea Eliade's book " Shamanism " ; for information on Core Shamanism, which is primarily the sort of methods I use, Michael Harner's " The Way of the Shaman " and Sandra Ingerman's " Soul Retrieval " are good resources. Tom Cowan also has a book on Celtic Shamanism, " Fire in the Head " , and a personal favorite of mine on that subject is " The Way of Wyrd " . Malidoma Some, a Dagara shaman, wrote " Of Water and the Spirit " about his initiation to one form of African shamanism. I also lean more towards Native American shamanism, but that is what I am familiar with. I also think Michael Harner has done us all a great service by developing a system for journeywork that is reliable using rhythm and movement and avoiding hallucinogenic substances for trance. >celeste m sullivan <csull3 > > >Re: Solar Plexus >Thu, 1 Mar 2001 13:07:53 -0600 > >Hi Crow, > >That's interesting---thanks for sharing.
