" Some have speculated that this may have been a name used by Usui Sensei during his life. And if so, it could be a reason why we have found no record of Dr. Usui attending the University of Chicago or of being the president of Doshisha University in Kyoto. It has been thought by some that if he had another name, and that perhaps he used this name at these two Universities and this is the reason we cannot find a record of anyone named Mikao Usui there. However, according to Arjava Petter, this other name is actually a name he was given after he died. It is a name used in the afterworld. ---------- Treating the Flu ---------- In Dr. Hayashi's healing guide, he lists various illnesses and conditions and the hand positions to treat them. Here are his hand positions for treating the flu. 1. Nose 2. Throat 3. Trachea 4. Bronchi 5. Lungs 6. Liver 7. Pancreas 8. Stomach 9. Intestines 10. Kidneys 11. Head 12. Ketsueki-Kokan. This last step is a technique for cleansing the blood. Have the client lay on their stomach. Then stroke in the air just above the spine from the neck down. ---------- Gassho Meditation ---------- Gassho means " two hands coming together. " This is a meditation Dr. Usui did everyday. He mentions it in the Reiki ideals where he says: " Mornings and evenings sit in gassho position and repeat these words out loud and in your heart. " In his Reiki handbook, he called gassho the first pillar of Reiki so he must have felt it to be a very important part of Reiki practice. We have found this to be true and suggest that it be done everyday. It clears the mind, opens the heart and strengthens ones Reiki energy. It also creates a wonderful stillness and feelings of inner peace. Here is how to do it: 1. This meditation can be done standing, but most prefer sitting. It is done for 15-30 minutes per session. 2. Close your eyes. Fold your hands in the prayer position with your fingers pointing up and your thumbs touching the heart chakra at the middle of your chest. 3. Focus all your attention on the point where your middle fingers meet. This is the second finger from your thumb. 4. If thoughts arise, acknowledge them and then gently brush them aside and refocus on the point where your middle fingers are touching. 5. As you continue to practice, you will find that you can hold your attention on the middle fingers for a longer and longer period of time without thoughts arising. 6. It is important to accept that thoughts will arise. When this happens, do not think you have made a mistake, as this is completely normal. However, as soon as you realize that you are focusing on a thought, brush it aside and refocus back on the point where your middle fingers touch. 7. When you have reached the end of the mediation, take a couple of deep breaths, bring your attention to your eyes, and open your eyes slowly. ---------- Japanese Reiki Techniques Training ---------- The Gassho meditation is one of the techniques in the handbook Dr. Usui gave to all his students and is part of The Japanese Reiki techniques that have begun to be taught in the West in the last year or so. These were brought to the West mainly by Mr. Doi and by Arjava Petter. Many read about the JRTs in Arjava's book, " The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui " or have taken his JRT class or purchased the JRT Video workshop. Both his book and the video workshop are available through our online Reiki store at www.reiki.org. ---------- JRTs Now In Reiki, The Healing Touch ---------- I have now included the Japanese Reiki Techniques in my Reiki manual, " Reiki, The Healing Touch. " Also included is the Hayashi Healing Guide. This has expanded the class workbook to 176 pages! Included are nine of the JRT techniques Dr. Usui taught to his students, some of which are illustrated. The Hayashi Healing Guide is the same manual that Dr. Hayashi gave to his students. The HHG lists various illnesses and conditions and the hand positions to treat them. For more information or to order this book, please go to: http://www.reiki.org/WebStore/Books/CP451.html Dr. Usui practiced Reiki in a less structured way than we have been taught in the West. He relied more on his intuition and inner sensitivity when giving treatments. He did not use the standard set of hand positions as taught by Mrs. Takata. Dr. Hayashi developed hand positions for specific illnesses and conditions based on his experience. All methods have value When we first started to learn about the original methods practiced in Japan, many wanted to abandon their Western Reiki techniques and practice only what Dr. Usui had taught. However, we realized that this may not be the best thing to do as both Japanese and Western Reiki techniques are useful. Takata's standard treatment has value in that it increases vitality, and gives Reiki to the whole person, thus creating balance. The hand positions for specific illnesses and conditions in the Hayashi Healing Guide are also useful when a client comes with a specific condition. Dr. Usui's intuitive methods, Reiji-ho and Byosen scanning allow a practitioner to tune-in to the client and go immediately to those areas most in need at the same time they help the client become aware of where they are out of balance. Some have wondered how to combine the Western and the Japanese methods in a treatment. Here is one way: Start with Byosen scanning, followed by a complete standard treatment, and finish with the hand placements in the Hayashi Healing Guide if the person has a specific condition listed there. Others may find another combination more useful. As you practice all the JRTs and those from the HHG and become familiar with them, you will be better able to develop your own style based on the techniques that work best for you. ---------- Our New Bulletin Board: ---------- Our new Reiki bulletin board is up and running. It has many new features including the ability for everyone to list a personal profile of themselves including a picture and to sort the posts in a variety of ways. We have started out with some simple topic groups: Beginners Topics, Giving Treatments, Teaching Reiki and General Topics. We also have some new moderators who will be there to offer their help, answer questions and share from their years of experience. They are: Beth Stapor, Kathy Lipinski and Michelle Brennen. To see the new bulletin board and to read their profiles, please go to: http://www.reiki.org/BBS/Topics.html ---------- Reiki In An Indian Prision by William Lee Rand ---------- While in India, I had the great pleasure of teaching Reiki to prison inmates. This was at the Tihar prison in New Delhi, which, with 11,000 inmates is the largest prison in India. The class was composed of 60 students that included inmates, guards and some of the doctors. The inmates had committed a wide range of offenses including some with serious crimes including murder and several who had been given life sentences. I found the attitude and energy of the class much different that what I had expected. They were all very open, friendly and enthusiastic. To read this article and see a picture, please go to: http://www.reiki.org/reikinews/ReikiInPrison.html ---------- Reiki Jokes: ---------- By William Rand I recently taught Reiki in India and had many interesting and exciting experiences during the 5 weeks I was there. My sponsor lined up lots of work for me including teaching Reiki to inmates in a prison in Delhi. (see article above) I taught a master or Karuna class on the weekends and a I & II during the week. Most of the classes had 25 or more students and I was teaching 5 days a week and sometimes doing treatments and lectures and interviews on the other days. I think I was getting a little dingy from all this work, but who knows? Sometimes one comes up with ones best work when one is in unusual states. Anyway, I was teaching a master class and after the attunement when people were writing down their experiences, Reiki jokes started coming to me. So, here they are. Let me know if they make you laugh and please let me know if you have any of your own. What is a Chokurette? It is a ChoKu Rei that is picked while still green and deep-fried. What is a Dai Cameo? A guest appearance by Dr. Usui. What is a Tibetan Dai Cameo? A guest appearance by the Dalai Lama. How many Reiki masters does it take to screw in a light bulb? None, their lights don't go out. What does a Reiki master have if their breath doesn't smell good? Violent Breath. How does a Reiki master prevent violent breath? They use attune-mints. How do you know when your students are getting fresh? When they ask you to demonstrate the Hui Yin exercise. What do you give a student who is having trouble holding the Hui Yin? Duct tape. ---------- How To Send In Articles & Information? ---------- If you have Reiki information, short articles, Reiki experiences, Reiki jokes, etc. that you think would be of interest to our readers please send them in.
