Does anyone have any information on holistic or energetic treatments for

diverticulosis? Someone I care about has developed this condition, and I

have some ideas about some energetic and emotional reasons why she is

experiencing this. I wanted to get some feedback from my esteemed list

members as well. Thanks in advance!

Greetings Julie,

There is an excellent herbal preparation developed by a Canadian herbalist

by the name of Lise Blouin called " Formula Twelve " (contains Slippery Elm,

Marhsmallow Root and Knitbone) which has been used to coat the entire

digestive system with a healing, breathing patch. The sacs (which are

formed in diverticulitis) are often repaired within just a course of several

weeks.

I also recommend adding Purple Loosestrife (an herb) which has been shown to

strengthen the muscular fibers of the intestines.

And as always, visualizing the color yellow in the abdominal region as well

to strengthen the energies of the 3rd chakra...

Hope this helps...

Julie:

Hmm. Well, here you go. Diverticulosis is somewhat familial, but it is

postulated that the reason for that is that families tend to eat the same

sorts of foods, and that the disorder may be partially dietarily induced and

exacerbated, as well as irritated by stress.

In diverticulosis, there are little pockets (diverticula) in the bowel that

have developed abnormally (it is speculated that they are caused by a lack

of fiber in the diet and consuming large amounts of processed foods), and

these can become inflamed (diverticulitis). Often, the culprit that causes

inflammation can be impacted feces or small items in the diet, such as

stringy food or small seeds (like tomato seeds, for example). Treatment

varies, but one important thing is consuming adequate water and fine fiber,

avoiding things that cause problems (scraping the seeds out of the tomato,

for instance), and exercise. The exercise serves the dual purpose of

increasing bowel motility and general relaxation. The old " bland diet " that

used to be endorsed for this is very outre'... no reason to avoid seasonings

or fiber. It can be a painful disorder, but if managed well complications

can be avoided.

OK... now for the energetic aspects of diverticulosis. Here is something to

think about... " easily irritated by small details " ... a person who has this

disorder may be prone to personal perfectionism and obsession with extranea;

although that may mean they are great hostesses, organizers and managers, it

may also mean that they are somewhat " type A " , workaholics, or too hard on

themselves. The demands they place on themselves may arise from perceived

expectations of others, or the desire to please others, and eventually

become internalized as a feeling of having to be perfect at everything. This

is not the same as " irritable bowel syndrome " ; rather than expelling the

irritant, the diverticulous bowel hangs onto it and becomes more and more

irritated and painful.

Visualizations and energy work should be focused towards releasing and

relaxing, letting go and going with the flow. Another focus may be self

acceptance, self love, and recognition of personal gifts and abilities. This

person needs to feel that they are in charge of themselves, even when they

are not in control. A good way to exercise that muscle is to break routine

by doing something safe but interesting/different occasionally. Try working

with both the sacral chakra and the solar plexus area. Use the emotional

symbol with your Reiki work.

It is interesting to me that this is a common disorder in industrialized

nations, whereas in less developed countries it is not a problem. Of course

diet has a part in this, but I am also prone to believe that the pace and

demands of our modern society place a lot of pressure on us to be

productive, and feelings of inadequacy in this area worsen in our society as

we age, because we lack the respect for elders that extended family group

societies have. According to WebMD, almost half of the American population

between 60-80, and almost everyone over 80, has diverticulosis... doesn't

that say something about how we treat ourselves as elders?
