Guest guest
Dear Erdeen, I will be sending you light next Thursday. I realize that time is short, but I wonder if you have heard of a book by Peggy Huddleston, _Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster_. It's full of excellent mind-body methods for preparing yourself, the most important of which is deep relaxation and visualizing the positive outcomes you wish. You can visit her website, www.healfaster.com. Also, here is an excerpt from my book that deals with surgery. In the current medical system, patients give all power to the surgeon and are passive. Feeling helpless is hard on our nervous systems and immune systems; when we are anxious our ability to heal is diminished. Research in psychoneuroimmunology has revealed links between anxiety, helplessness, and suppression of the immune response. At New York Presbyterian Hospital, thanks to its Complementary Medicine services, patients have access to classes on hypnosis, breath, guided imagery, and meditation. Jery Whitworth, R.N., executive director of the department, states that patients who use these services report that their stres drops by an average of 69%; reported pain decreases by 57%. " People who have done mind/body preparation for surgery usually need less anesthesia during the operation and less pain medicine afterwards, " says Steven Gurgevich, Ph.D., a psychologist who teaches self-hypnosis to patients at Dr. Andrew Weil's Integrative Medicine Clinic in Tucson, Arizona. Visualizing favorable outcomes, perhaps with the help of a tape, overcomes fear and programs our bodies to resond in desirable ways. Imagine the healing process taking place in your body; see and feel yourself doing something you love, fully enjoying life. Prior to surgery and also while under anesthesia, our minds are as suggestible as if we were in a hypnotic state. In a study by Dr. Henry Bennett, a group of patients were told, fifteen minutes before surgery, that they could direct their bloodflow away from the site of the surgical incision. This group lost on average only 500 cc of blook, while a control group averaged a 900 cc blood loss. Dr. McLintock and others at the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow, Scotland, studied women undergoing hysterectomy. Those who listened to a tape of " positive therapeutic suggestions " while under anesthesia required 24% less pain medicatin the day after surgery than a control group with a blank tape. You can create a tape for yourself with suggestions on it wuch as: " My blood moves away from the incision site, and returns after the stitches are in place. " " After my operation I'll be hungry, my stomach will gurgle, and I will urinate easily. " " My body is healing rapidly and well. I feel comfortable. " Surgery need not create feelings of helplessness or anxiety when you play an active role in your preparation and healing process. *** Hope this helps! I received the October videos on Saturday and got part way through the first one last weekend. Right to the part where Donna was demonstrating the toe technique and saying it would be a nice way to end a session. Well, I do reflexology and I thought how great it would be to include that in a session. My first " guinea pig " was today. A woman in her 80's with a number of things going on physically one of which is diabetes with some neuropathy (nerve damage to synapses in feet making them alternately numb and painfully tingly). First of all, although she had been quite chatty throughout the session she became quiet and closed her eyes with the first toe hold and said that it felt good. By the time I got to the second toe to be held she was asleep and would have slept even deeper had the phone not rung. The really neat thing was how warm her toes got by the end of the 15 minutes and she said they were not crampy at all. She was very impressed with the results and was still incredulous at how good her feet felt when I left. Her feet and legs had always felt better after a session but this technique took it to a new level. What a great thing! and so simple to do. I love this work!!
