The average duration is 5 years but it can last 20 or more years. Normal moods can intercede but only last from a few days to a couple months. This normal mood, however brief, is what distinguishes it from major depression. The number and severity of symptoms, for both dysthymia and major depression, are about the same. The major difference is that dysthymics have the periods of normal moods. Dysthymia is prevelant but rarely diagnised, as individuals think they just have the " blues " or " it is the way they've always been. " (this info comes from my psych teacher who also has a masters plus in psych and is practicing). As far as familial findings, there isn't much evidence that points to biological connections for dysthymia. Dysthymics will show few if any biological abnormalities. I'm sorry to say, but I have found little evidence of causes for dysthymia. AS far as treatments, the alternatives I've checked out that seem to work are exercise therapy, transcendental meditation, music therapy and even horticultural therapy. I am still researching others for my second paper. I could send you a copy of my paper if you would like, it wouldn't be a problem. I hope this is of some help. I would be more than happy to keep you informed of future findings if you wish too. You are more than welcome to email me directly if you wish. Happy researching, I'm sure having fun learning about it. I believe I maybe dysthymic, which I why I picked this topic for my research. Let me know if you have anymore questions or if I answered any of the ones asked. Please let me know if you find anything of interest. I would appreciate any info too.
