Guest guest
Abs: My apologies for dragging around on this one, I just found it in my 'drafts' file this morning <G> I've appended several links for you about diverticulosis and the inflammatory condition associated with it, diverticulitis. The disorder involves little pockets that have developed in the bowel; the common belief now is that they are a result of a diet poor in fiber over an extended period of time; there may be other factors. My mother's family has a pretty high prevalence, but that might also be due to common diet. I'm afraid the doctor was about as honest and conservative as he could be regarding this disorder. Most inflammation resolves itself, either naturally or with support of antibiotics. Occasionally a fistula (an opening) will develop via a diverticulum outside the bowel, or an abcess will develop, and of course that would require surgical intervention. Otherwise, maintenance is the key. Diverticulitis is very painful, but not generally fatal; there is seldom even bleeding in the diverticula. Increasing fiber and fluid intake, avoiding irritants like alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and caustic foods, learning personal relaxation methods and maintaining good bowel hygiene (in other words, going when you need to, on a regular schedule, avoiding constipation, etc)... those are good ways to keep the diverticula from causing problems. Including a goodly amount of garlic in the diet and yoghurt or buttermilk may help maintain a proper balance of good flora while at the same time discouraging troublesome ones. He might also look into some nice herbal teas or other natural methods such as a routine spoon of flax or cod liver oil rather than a strong laxative, as repeated usage can have a rebound effect and they can be dependance forming. Hope this is helpful. If he is open to the idea, you might approach him with some of the details in the Sacral Chakra file, especially the affirmations and aromatherapy.
