Guest guest
> Dear Linda: I'm so grateful that you said this, as I rarely see this issue balanced anywhere. I gravitated into the nursing field rather later in my life, in my 30's, after going through cancer treatment and being tremendously impressed with the care I recieved in traditional medical environment, as well as a few other reasons. Later, I went into alternative medicine, for an aditional perspective. To me, Traditional medicine saved my life. Cured me of Cancer, but the alternatives helped me see contributing factors, understand the mechinism of prevention and staying healthy. I needed, and hope to be able to access both in the future. From my perspective, I've met some of the most wonderful, sincere, loving and honorable people in the Medical and Scientific community. I've yet to meet a doctor who is in it only for the money, or a scientist who's trying to disprove god. Doctors and Scientists are not against alternative medicine, heck it was all alternative untill someone tested it and saw a broad, benificial use for it. We've come along way from blood letting and astrology for medical cures, and each step away from that was at one time considered " alternative " . Doctors and scientists get cancer too, and in no way support any science or studies that would suppress cures. (not to say there aren't a few bad apples in every barrel) But when they speak against alternatives, using often, too broad a brush, what they're really concerned with is the quacks out there who would take advantage of frightened suffering people who would make a dollar selling " anything " that might give hope, and they aren't against hope, just against robbery. Having been in the alternative field for 15 years now, I can tell you, there is ALOT of crap out there. I could write a very long list of bad science, bad product, bad therapy, bad ethics in this alternative field. But I could write you a longer list of the good that has come out of it. We have many Doctors, nurse's, scientists, thereapists, etc, who come to our wellness center to take tai chi, buy vitamins etc. They give us wonderful support. I've even gotten prescriptions written on Dr's prescription pads for grapefruit seed extract and echinacea, from an conservative internal medicine dr. who doesn't want to give another antibiotic for a virus. In fact, my biggest competition in the alternative field is the medical community itself, because it can teach tai chi and meditation, and aromatherapy, etc, for alot less than I can. Our local hospitals have huge alternative programs now. This is great news for me, it is what I had hoped for when I began this journey, as I sincerely believe that we all deserve the very best of both, and a reasonable bridge between the two. But I don't believe it's the ideal for them to merge. As having Traditional and Alternative medicine and science at war with each other, keeps both systems more honest, better policed, and more creative. I see them as competitive industries, competing for the better mouse trap, the best cure, and I, the patient, reap the benefits of ever evolving mind/body/spirit wellness. If there is to be an enemy, I would call fowl on the insurance companies for limiting Doctors and science, the self design shamens selling expensive junk to sick folks, and the government for not funding good research, policing bad medicine, and making reasonable health care available equally to all. This is just my opinion, and my observations. I completly sympathize with anyone who has had the misfortune of getting a bad apple in any barrel. The man who has the wrong leg cut off by a surgeon has a right to blame the entire industry. The woman who was convinced not to use medicine for her cancer by a con person selling a brand new herb, only to find she's cut her life terribly short, can blame the whole industry as well. That is thier right. And I will not argue with them. But remember, when a person gets a good experience with any kind of medicine, they tell 4 people, when they have a bad expiernce, they tell 11 people. This is good science. The math alone means we are not getting the right information most of the time. Thanks for reading this, if you did. love connie > > I have to put in my 2 cents about scientists. Guest guest
Such good balanced comments by all re: spirituality/science, traditional/alternative medicine (I personally like 'Complimentary Medicine'). I find so many interesting things on this site---most of the time. Thanks all! Guest guest
Connie, If traditional medicine kept you here with us, then I am very glad for it! I agree with what you say - that both systems are needed to keep the 'check and balances' with each other. The hospitals may take away some of your business, but I doubt they give the quality of service you do. I would rather pay more and come to a center like yours than get the services cheaper at a hospital. I know some of the 'alternative' programs in hospitals are good, but from my limited experience, I haven't seen it. They don't have the depth and groundedness - I guess the spirituality - that I find in private centers. I think all you're doing is wonderful.
