Guest guest
Hello Colleen, Whenever someone complains or speaks bitterly or with disdain about others' communication, I wonder why. Esepcially when all you have to do to avoid stuff you don't want to read is to delete it. I agree it gets cumbersome to wade through digests when people don't edit the previous posts down to the points that they wish to respond to. So far as the banter engaged in by myself and others, well, sorry if it upsets you but some of us do think it is important. As you can see from the emotions that get kicked up, people seem to care passionately about the subject. I don't believe there is any coercion involved on either the part of those who write it or those who read or chose not to read. Which again makes me ask you why you would seek to make it go away. Since you already profess to understand motives, I see no reason to reiterate my own. I've stated them clearly in the past, and I am aware that being perceived as someone who likes to argue is not necessarily good for one's reputation. But I think these are important things, and I think they are indeed worth arguing about. I suggest to you that if you are concerned about professionalism, that the professional thing to do is to stay out of discussions in which you do not wish to take part. Perhaps it could be discreetly moved there for the sake of the folks who feel alienated by the discussion on the CHA list... just a thought...... paz y amor y musica robert

I, for one, am quite interested in the dynamics that result in individuals feeling assaulted by communication about words and language. I believe that people are susceptible to contracting such feelings to the degree to which they do not comprehend the words and and language being used. In the past, whenever the question of the appropriateness of this topic on this list has been raised, as the list owner and moderator, has stepped forward to state that as far as he is concerned, it is altogether appropriate. I think a large part of the problem comes from various individual's failure to edit their posts, so that those who via digests end up with impossibly long texts to scroll through. I stopped using that option and just read through the list on the website reading and responding to those posts that I wish to. I highly recommend this approach to others, as it cuts way down on the feeling of being overwhelmed. But in the end, I still would argue that what underlies much of the turmoil generated is the fact of widespread misunderstandings about the words themselves.
