Guest guest
Thank you, Misha. I recently started skin brushing, but didn't have such a comprehensive " how-to " on doing it. Very useful! Happy Friday!
Guest guest
Someone on another list I'm on was asking about skin brushing and I put together this info and thought I'd pass it on to you also. I got my dry skin brush at my local health food store. It's made by Yerba Prima (www.yerba.com which also sells colon supplements). Many blessings, Misha ************* SKIN BRUSHING http://www.hedgerowhealers.com/skinbrsh.html The Importance Of Skin Brushing Skin brushing really is one of the most important steps in any detoxification programme and as a part of any health maintenance plan. The skin is the largest organ of the body. It has many important functions including absorption of nutrients, protection and the elimination of wastes through the sweating reflex. Healthy skin can excrete pounds of waste products from the body daily. The sweat glands work as miniature detoxifying organs which cleanse the blood and expel toxic poisons. These are the main reasons why we need to take care of our skin. ------------- The Many Benefits of Skin Brushing The benefits of skin brushing really have to be experienced to be believed! We've yet to meet anyone who does skin brushing on a regular basis that doesn't like it. Skin brushing really stimulates the circulation, helping to pump the blood more efficiently around the body. It also has a powerful affect on the glandular and nervous systems due to the nerve endings in the skin becoming stimulated. This assists in correcting any imbalance. Skin brushing not only stimulates the blood and nerve circulation, but also moves the lymphatic system. The lymph system can be looked at as our waste disposal system and can easily become clogged. Skin brushing stimulates the expulsion of waste products, toxins and impacted lymph (cellulite). The main collection of lymph nodes are found behind the elbows, knees, either side of the throat, under the arms and in the groin area so special attention must be paid to these areas when brushing. Anti-perspirant deodorants can block the lymph glands (which are part of our immune system), especially under the arms. We have witnessed this through iridology, especially in women leading to problems such as mastitis and tender and swollen lymph glands. Skin brushing helps move congested lymph very effectively. Skin brushing also removes dead skin layers and other impurities. It also keeps the pores in the skin open and unclogged which generally increases the eliminative capacity of the skin. This will leave the skin glowing and healthy. According to research five minutes of energetic skin brushing is equivalent to thirty minutes of jogging as far as muscle tone is concerned. Skin brushing helps to build a better distribution of fat deposits. Skin brushing really does energize, tone and detoxify the whole body. --------- ----- How to Skin Brush To start with you will need a natural (synthetic fibres can be detrimental as they cause a build up of static electricity in the body) vegetable fibre bristle Skin Brush with a long detachable handle. The bristles need to feel abrasive at first - don't worry they will soften up slightly the more you brush. Just go easy to start with if you are new to skin brushing. Don't share your skin brush and wash it regularly using natural soap or Tea Tree Oil. Directions: Brush on dry skin only. Always brush towards the heart in long sweeping strokes. Repeat these at least seven times. Start brushing on the soles of your feet from the toes to the heels. Brush up each leg. Remember to pay particular attention to behind the knees and in the groin. Brush up over the buttocks and up the lower back and sides of the trunk. Next brush over the abdomen area in a clockwise direction, follow the line of the colon. Avoid the genital area. Brush the palm and the back of one hand and carry on up the arm to the shoulder, greater stimulation may be needed under the arm. Repeat on the other arm. Use Downward strokes on the scalp, back of the head, neck and throat, then over the chest. Avoid brushing the nipples. Attach the handle to the brush and then stroke across the back of the shoulder and the upper back. Do not brush the face - a smaller, softer brush is needed for this area. Do not brush infected, irritated or damaged skin or varicose veins. -------------- Skin brushing should take five minutes daily and is best done on a morning. If you brush in the evening you won't sleep. It would be too stimulating! For the first three months of treatment you should aim to brush every day. After this reduce the brushing to 2 or 3 times weekly, changing the days each week. After skin brushing it is a good idea to remove dead skin cells by showering. When you first start skin brushing you may notice that your whole body is enveloped in a cloud of exfoliated skin, which looks like dust. Take a hot shower, then a cold shower for as long as you can stand. When showering move the water over your skin following the directions of the skin brushing (from feet upwards etc.). The more times you can alternate the hot and cold temperature the better it will be for the circulation of the blood, lymph and nerve supplies, plus the elimination of toxins. Always finish with cold water. Start out by building up to having the water really cold. Let the water run down the back of your neck and along your spine; shout and scream out if you have to! This often proves to be a good release and is therapy in itself. If a shower is impossible then take a bath and throw cold water over your head afterwards - don't forget the screams and shouts - or flannel the towel the body down to remove the dead skin. I like chamomile.. or any " cleansing type " teas. This cleanse can pull many toxins out of your skin... Do this about 2 times a month in conjuction with your daily brushing...
