Hi Renee: GABA can reduce the overactivebrain which leads to anxiety and bipolar behaviours. Gaba is a natural hormone that is produced behind theBBB [blood brain barrier] but supplements of gaba cannot cross. There are some compounds containing gaba that have been designed to cross the BBB, but as yet the medical community is doubtful. Having said that however, there are lots of testimonials from people that feel great effects. Far more than simple placebo effect would indicate. However, Orthomoleluclar medicine has found that a combination of Niacin [b3], and Inositol [b8], triggers the gaba receptors on the brain cells and this combo does cross the BBB. If you go to your health food store and get Non Flush Niacin, it is the exact combination of niacin and inositol to take. The inositol keeps the niacin from causing the flushing effect. The usual suggested dose is 0ne 500 mg. tablet twice a day and take 500 grams of Calcium Ascorbate [non acidic vitamin C] with it. Try it, and if it's not working very well you may wish to switch to Niacinimide [synthetic niacin] and inositol. These do not come in combination so you'd have to get some of each. The ususal combination is 200 mg. niacinimide to 500 mg inositol. rusty. - " Renee Dotson " <luckyinviolet Friday, March 15, 2002 1:55 PM Re: gaba > > > > >>Does anyone know anything, or has anyone had any experience using the > >>amino acid GABA to counteract anxiety? > > Renee
