amy,

A friend of mine suffered bipolar 5 years ago while living in Maryland and

was taking medication. He returned to Sta Cruz, Ca. 3 years ago. He studied

swimming and started running on the hills, mountain biking, yoga class. He

is is calm and centered the few times I visited him. I am surprise on how

much changes he has been for the last two years. Once when he was in Maryland

I called Maryland hospital from San Francisco looking for pschiatrist/help

center because he was on his weakest moment of his life (suicidal ideation).

He checked himself to hosptial and seen a psychiatrist for months. He is

quite different now. I am impresssed how calm, grounded he is now. I do

love him for what he did in his life. He is competing in community events

like swiming and running. I will not be suprise if he join iron man.

Good luck

Hello all:

Maybe someone can help us. A very close friend of mine

has a teen (female/12 yrs) who is experiencing the

following sypmptoms:

*hyper behavior

*very physical (both violent and non)

*manic laughter

*verbal statements that are specifically targeted to get

your attention (sometimes gross or abusive)

*inability or fear of going to sleep

*thoughts of " killing the whole family "

*pronounced oppositional behavior

My friend has been to the pediatrician many times and

their answer was to prescribe Ritalin. The Ritalin is

not helping and neither is the pediatrician. Can anyone

give some suggestions or resources? Also, there is a

serious history of bipolar and addiction in the mother's

family.

Blessings and Thanks,

Amy

I am amazed that this girl hasn't been referred to a psychiatrist for a

full workup. And referral for individual therapy and family therapy. IMO,

that is negligence on the part of the pediatrician. If proper diagnosis

isn't made, any prescription could trigger worse problems.

In addition, I highly recommend the book (don't be frightened off by the

title; the book deals with a multitude of mental issues):

" Natural Healing for Schizophrenia & Other Common Mental Disorders " - by

Eva Edelman

Which I didn't realize is out of print til I checked the page out - maybe

someone in your local area has a copy you could borrow or can find it used

at www.half.com.

And Flower Remedies in the meantime:

I also have a friend who has good results using pycnogenol (French maritime

pinebark extract) with her " hyperactive " son. She gets it (called

PremiumPlus) from www.Lonezone.com (a two-bottle package with enough pills

to last 2 months for $34). She sent me these links with info:

Many blessings,

My name is Kath and I am Bipolar. This child needs to see a psychiatrist and get

a good therapist. I too feel that this is negligence on the part of the

pediatrician. The child can soon begin with suicidal tendancies and self

mutilation. A good mood stabilizer is needed and soon. I am no dr. but im a

bipolar mom who has been there and done that. The best advice you can give your

friend is to seek this type of help ASAP

good luck

Kath
