Guest guest
Kathy, To prevent stiffness, you need to exercise mutltiple time a day, seriously...I work in long term care for 15 years as an RN.. there are only two person I've seen who walk again. It depends on severity of the stroke/age/body affected. I suggest that you consult and maximize Occupational Therapist/Physical Therapist support also and learn as much as you can from them. Remember when muscle is not use they atropy. Because the paralized side have less sensation or does not register to the brain, alway touch the weakness side, talk sometimes or often on the weakness side because the mind need to retrain that there is other part of the body that it is there. Teach your dad to massage the weakness side. Remember that sometime it is highly sensitive and painful to touch the weakness side and pt. refused to have it excercise. Massage form deep to light touch..during the process I suggest to include your dad in massaging his weakness. Learn to take a break for yourself... My prayer for you and your dad...I do not know how much support you have but insist and be persistant in learning how to walk again.. just reminder.... slight pain/discomfort when walking is a good sign..but do not force it.... I don't know how much changes you have made in the house to support his walking..I suggest to put bars for him to hold... arnel...
Guest guest
Hi Katy, I am a massage therapist. Massage does help the circulation after a stroke, especially if the person has lost the the ability to move around as much as before the stroke. Massage is great passive exercise. If they need to relearn to walk, they would need to see a physical therapist. Good luck to you and I wish for your father's complete recovery. Jill Quick question to anyone having any info in this area, or maybe a site to recommend... Does anyone have any experience with massage...and assisting someone who is having lack of movement/stiffness due to stroke? This would be for my dad. Thanks Katy Master Herbalist
