Guest guest
Greetings all: I don't normally like to enter into discussions of this type as I feel that everyone has a valid opinion. However, I thought it may be helpful to share some personal experiences in this area. My mother recently had to undergo surgery for a hernia and to have her colostomy moved to a new location. I must say that this event proved to me that modern medicine is in a serious decline. The nurses failed to get her up and walking until the 3rd day after surgery. They continually failed to respond when she was in need of a bed pan. Then when they did bother to respond they would just toss it up on the bed and expect her to get herself on and off of it. They would then verbally abuse her when she spilled it. Someone took an item that was of sentimental value while she was sleeping and the hospital was completely unconcerned about making any effort to retrieve it. After returning home she began to show signs of an infection and upon calling the surgeon's office was told by the receptionist to " just take some Tylenol. " She called the surgeon 3x's over the period of one week, so that she could inform him of the symptoms that might indicate infection (btw, they failed to send her home with a script for antibiotics). The doctor failed to call her back until I called their office and stated that I was going to hire an attorney. A very close friend of mine is having the same problem with the doctor and staff, following surgery to correct a broken wrist. I don't know if it is the staff or the doctor at fault, but someone needs to wake up. As I sat in my doctor's office recently, two drug salespeople came into the office, one of them dressed in an obviously custome made and expensive " stomach " costume. They were having alot of laughs with the staff and taking pictures. During this time I heard the drug salesperson tell the office manager that she had better tell the doctor to write more scripts for their product, or else she would not be able to justify giving him samples any longer. I am not trying to bash or abuse the medical field as I have many friends and family who work within this field. I feel they serve an important role. However, my point is that it has become a business and has completely lost it's ability to serve it's original role of helping people. Just look at the salaries of the CEO's of some of the insurance companies and that should convince you that it is now about money, not people. Thank you for allowing my .02 Blessings, Amy K. I think it's horrible that these things happen, but I think the root problem is people, not method. In every line of work there will be people that are incompetent and uncaring. The solution to incompetence is not to eliminate the established, licensed, treatment community. It seems some are saying: " These people are incompetent, so let's get rid of them and have less educated, less trained, unlincensed people do the job " . Does that really make sense? Dave.
