I wanted to ask you to share what you know regarding the qualuity of the

human voice (speed, volume, clarity, pitch, intonation etc)

and how this can teach us about moods, personality and state of mind

I know that the eastern physicians pay attention to this.

please share

Thanks

Anat

That's interesting, and I haven't heard of any information about

this; I would also be interested in hearing more about this if

someone knows something.

Neuro Linguistic Programming, NLP, deals with this somewhat. There are many

NLP books on the market nowadays including some from the founders of NLP,

Bandler and Grinder. Some are great reading and others are sort of dry.

Anyway, NLP might be a good place to start looking.

Hi Everyone,

Been lurking for a while but couldn't resist this one :-)

I note someone mentions NLP well.... nlp was derived from the work of, among

others, Milton Erickson. A hypnotist. And forget NLP which attempts to

mechanize this process, look at it's roots.

In hypnosis the voice is naturally, the most important tool of the

hypnotist. Think about it, one of the first suggestions we give is -close

your eyes. There are several books with titles such as " The healing voice " ,

" My voice goes with you " etc...

Now most hypnosis schools, and lots of web sites, tell the hypnotist to use

a regular beat to their voice, to talk monotonously or at least slowly etc

etc....

I used to do the same until I realised something much more fundamental. The

voice, as with body language, eye movements and all the factors which allow

us to communicate, do one thing - reflect what's inside.

I tell my students that if they are not confident of who they are and what

they do then this will be heard. Even more so in hypnosis where the

subconscious is super concentrated on the voice.

Now a good actor is able to do this- move you by the way they pronounce

words, as much as by what the words say. The reason for this is that they

learn to dig within and find the necessary emotion and 'fill' themselves

with this. Really good singers do the same thing - Barbara Striesand springs

to mind.

So how do you use this in what you do? I could now go on almost as long as a

New York article about weight - but I won't ;-)))

To use your voice to best effect - be confident in the subject you are

talking about. FEEL inside the message you wish to convey. Believe in you.

Your voice will do the rest. . .

There are, unfortunately, those who use the monotone and even teach it.

The better hypnosis schools out there have for years taught that the

monotonal voice should be avoided.

Milton simply didn't have much of a voice. That doesn't mean we

should copy him in that regard.

Interesting. I ascribe to the Taoist principles that the tone and strength

of the voice is an indication of kidney health, or lack of it. I know

quite a few women who have very odd high pitched voices, and severe kidney

problems as well....

Taoists say that a clear melodious voice is the indication of healthy kidneys.
