Guest guest
At this time of thanksgiving, I've been thinking about the importance of feeling prosperity, rather than lack, in spite of the prevalent perspective that " whoever has the most stuff is a winner. " I see this materialistic focus in the television advertisements and in many magazines -- yet we can remember what really matters, and feel much happier when we do! I'd love to share a short excerpt from my book, " Karen Kimball & the Dream Weaver's Web " -- in which Karen hears a story told by a man from the Blackfoot nation about Spider Woman. Wishing you every blessing of love, Cynthia Sue Larson ¸,ø ?º°`°º?ø,¸¸,ø?º°`°º?ø,¸¸,ø?º°`°º?ø,¸¸,ø?º°`°º? ø,¸ " Once upon a time, the people had a problem with remembering to be grateful. They did not wake up every morning feeling glad to see the sun and the Earth, but instead awakened feeling angry that they had not gotten as much rain as they wanted or that some of their plants were withering or feeling jealous that their neighbors had more good things than they did. The people forgot to greet each other with love and joy. Instead, they blamed one another for causing trouble. Spider Woman watched all this from her quiet web and saw that the people needed a reminder to be thankful again. She came up out of her quiet home in the Earth and tickled the foot of a little boy who was sitting by a stream. " 'Little boy,' said Spider Woman in her soft, silky voice, 'What is it that you need the most?' " The boy was startled to be awakened by Spider Woman, and he did not know what to say. He started to say that he needed some fish, but then he realized that he was not very hungry. 'I need a new hunting spear,' the boy replied, and Spider Woman nodded. " And when you have your hunting spear, you will be happy?' inquired Spider Woman. " I will have a hunting spear so I can catch all the fish I can eat!' said the boy. 'Then I can feed all the people, and they will know I am a man.' " 'And then you will be glad?' asked Spider Woman again. " 'I think so,' nodded the boy. " 'How will you feel if you see another boy who has a spear that is sharper and more beautiful than yours?' " 'I will feel sad, and I will need a better spear,' replied the boy. " 'How will you know when your spear is so good that you won't need another?' " The boy looked at Spider Woman and had no words. Suddenly he said, 'If I had the sharpest, longest, handsomest, strongest, straightest spear there was, then I would be happy.' " Spider Woman prompted, 'And how would you know yours was best?' " 'Because I would compare mine to all the others and make sure nobody else had a better spear than I.' " Spider Woman sighed. 'Come with me,' she said, and she led the boy to the people, who gathered in a large circle around them. Spider Woman then announced, 'There is a sickness among us. The people are not happy with what they have, but constantly long for what they do not have. It is time to remember to appreciate who and what is here before everything is gone. It is not too late. While you are still among the wise ones who swim, who walk on four legs, who fly, and who crawl, you can remember to honor the Earth, the air, the water and fire and the four sacred directions. When you feel grateful that you two-legged ones are part of all this, and show your appreciation to the four directions, the four elements, the four kinds of animals, and the four kinds of plants then you will know that it is not too late.' " 'I will teach you a song to sing so you may know this for all time. When you sing it, be sure to sing it four times.' Then Spider Woman sang. " Karen listened in awe as Gill's deep voice filled the kitchen. I turn to the Earth in the North. I bow to those who walk, and plants within the Earth. Together we stand tall. I turn to the Air in the East. I bow to those who fly, and plants which touch the sky. Together we are free. I turn to the Fire in the South. I bow to those who crawl, and the desert plants of heat. Together we burn brightly as the sun. I turn to the Water in the West. I bow to those who swim, and the water plants who live therein. Together we flow as one. " Spider Woman left the people with instructions to practice the song until they knew it by heart, " he continued. " 'We have been causing our own problems,' they said, 'but Spider Woman is wise and has shown us that it is not too late.' " Spider Woman smiled as she looked on from her web and wove a bit more of this dream.
