We used them in a dance therapy class for somatic psychology. The first is " Bodywise " by Joseph Heller and William Henkin. It's an introduction to Hellerwork: " The purpose of this book is to explain something of the way all human bodies function in order to gicve you a greater ability to feel alive in your own body, to have more pleasure and fewer problems with i, and to explore its interconnecting with other parts of the universe, beginning with your own multifaceted self..... Hellerwork assumes that we are responsible for our bodies; that we have a choice; that life can be better from now on .... Hellerwork makes the connection between life issues and natural bodily alignment, and shows how to restore the body's natural balance from the inside out. " Bodywise " teaches the reader how to regain control and become a full-time owner of the body. " " Joseph Heller is a leading bodyworker and teacher, and former president of the Rolf Institute. " This book is recommended by Dan Millman, author of " Way of the Peaceful Warrior, " which is one of my favorite martial arts books. As an aside, martial arts can be very healing movement, and empowering for those who have experienced abuse. The second book from the somatic movement class is called " BodyStories: A guide to experiential anatomy. " This book " is applicable to dancers, artists, athlestes, bodyworkers, massage therapists, teachers and individuals with injuries or with a special interest in learning about their body .... The book draws on Ms. Olsen's twenty years as a dancer and teacher of anatomy to show how our attitudes and approaches to our body affect us day to day. Anecdotes ... about working with colleageues Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen in experiential anatomy and Janet Adler in Authentic Movement demonstrate how movement patterns and memories are part of our physical heritage, and how the body serves as a language for our world community.
