What I have read suggests that swimming with dolphins is a lot better for humans than it is from the dolphins. The dolphins evidently get skin diseases and other infections from their human swimming companions. -- ------ * Joel P. Guest guest
Aloha, Thank you for the opportunity to share some information about dolphin health and well being. Dolphins held in captive facilities where people can pet, hug and hold onto the dolphins do require the regular administration of antibiotics. In the wild, dolphins form a protective film over their bodies. This transparent, slimy layer acts as a barrier that helps naturally protect the dolphins from disease and bacteria in the water. In captive facilities where human touch takes place regularly, this layer is wiped off and not allowed to re-establish itself - and thus the need to administer antibiotics is regularly required to maintain health. Though this is not very healthy for the dolphins overall. Swimming with dolphins in the wild is a very different situation. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii and conduct retreats in which people can enter the water with wild dolphins. I and every boat captain here inform everyone who comes for a wild dolphin swim not to ever try to pet or touch a dolphin. Even though a brush or pet would not hurt a 'healthy' dolphin because their immune system could compensate for the occasional brushed off area of the protective membrane, this behavior is considered invasive and disrespectful to the dolphin. Ask yourself if you would like a stranger grabbing you in the street?? Humans swimming with dolphins in the ocean do not create a health risk. The pollution of our oceans does. The deployment of low frequency active sonar by the navy in dolphin prone areas, such as here in the Hawaiian islands were war games took place for two months this year using this life threatening technology to all mammals, is very disruptive to dolphin health and it is diminishing the number of dolphin pods here and around the islands. Net fishing, which has killed over one half of the dolphin population since its use began in the 1950's is also a major threat to dolphin health and the longevity of the species. So why swim with the dolphins? Scientific studies have been made over long periods of time in my own backyard, Kealakekua Bay. This bay is known for dolphin pods regularly entering its naturally protected area and people swimming here too. It was found that when dolphins entered the bay and people were present, the dolphins would swim directly to the humans and interact. They do not try to avoid or to keep a distance, even though the bay is large and could easily hide a dolphin pod from human swimmers if the dolphins wanted privacy. But most of the time they do not! And remember that dolphins can out swim with ease the fastest human swimmer in the world. It only takes a flick of their tale to propel them out of site of a over enthusiastic swimmer, and yet again, they keep coming back to interact and play. In the end, people who come into the wild to meet the dolphins can honor and respect this species' freedom and their personal space while gaining all the benefits too. The dolphins have demonstrated beyond doubt that they enjoy human company, and when we honor them in return, we can swim eye to eye with a dolphin and feel ourselves transformed by their joy, trust, intelligence and advanced sonar healing capacity. Many people who have had this experience then go home inspired to protect animals and all life forms on the planet. People who have looked into a dolphin's eyes want to help protect our environment and go home and do something - becoming activists or active in some way that contributes to changing abuses of nature. Even dolphins in captive facilities influence countless people to care more about this planet and all life here. But in striving for a better world, we must envision and create a reality in which no being must sacrifice itself for the education of another. Yet we already have that solution in the wild, in the ocean where we can be with another intelligently advanced species, the dolphins, and take upon ourselves the responsibility to protect its health and well being by cleaning up the oceans and protecting the waters from all man-made dangers. They give us joy and love, we give them a protected and clean home - this is our real inner-species relationship expressed in balance. Let's all get to work for our children and for theirs!! Guest guest
Hello Angelika, Thank you for your thought provoking post. Could you elaborate on what you termed " advanced sonar healing capacity. " regarding the dolphins? - thank you -
