Hi. Newbie here.

You can buy HCl at the health food store as Betaine HCl. The brand I

currently have is " Optimum " , but probably any brand will work.

I don't know if it's actually stomach acid, but some foods will give

me " heartburn " . But if a food gives you pain, I don't really

recommend trying to increase stomach acid that way. When I take the

Betaine HCl, I never have any pain from taking it. It just works to

digest the food I'm having a problem with.

I notice that I have more gas and bloating with foods that I react

to. Don't ask me why I would eat something I react to -- I'm

allergic to garlic. But sometimes if someone is eating pizza -- or

spaghetti -- or [fill in name here], I don't resist and will have

some. I've found things with a high sugar content will give me

heartburn. And things like barbeque sauce, barbequed meats (not

plain barbequed meats, but any with a sauce on them) are biggies also.

If you haven't already, get allergy testing if you can. It will

eliminate a lot of your problems right away just knowing what to

avoid. (Most MD's will think skin prick testing if you mention

allergy testing. While that can be helpful, I got the blood testing -

- and it confirmed that I was allergic to garlic. Which was helpful

because I didn't know if it was the tomatoes, seasoning, or what.)

Many many years ago I had purchased some garlic and parsley gelcaps

to try to improve my health -- the only problem was I felt like a

truck had hit me every time I took them. Which really made a lot of

sense after I found out about the garlic allergy.

The Betaine HCl should help in addition to the enzymes. Some enzyme

formulas already have the Betaine HCl in them. For me, the formulas

that have pancreatin, ox bile, etc. work best. A couple I had gotten

from a chiropractor (also many many many years ago) actually seemed

to irritate my GI tract and gave me the runs. If that happens, look

elsewhere for an enzyme formula. When I find a good deal on

supplements I know I'll use I go ahead and buy them. I found the

Betaine HCl separately. I find it helps even without the enzymes

most of the time.

Hope this helps.
