One of the companies taking center stage at "SmartTagging in Healthcare" is the VeriChip Corporation, asubsidiary of Applied Digital Solutions. VeriChip willbe making a presentation around its chip'sapplications in healthcare -- which, the company is atpains to emphasize, are still under review by the U.S.Food and Drug Administration (FDA).VeriChip spokesperson Matthew Cossolotto praises thepotential benefits of the technology, beginning withthe revelation that he has been "chipped" himself."It's a simple, painless procedure, like getting ashot," he says. The subdermal chip is usuallyimplanted in the tricep, as it was in Cossolotto'scase. From a medical standpoint -- pending future FDAapproval -- it could be used to list Cossolotto'smedication and other health information in case ofemergency. Cossolotto adds, however, that a medicalchip functions only in the context of a system thatincludes scanners (including hand-held) at hospitaland emergency sites and a central database to whichthe scanners will link to download a patient'sinformation.Cossolotto is aware that there could be many privacyconcerns around VeriChip. Recently, an uproar overBenetton's plan to tag its clothes caused the companyto pull back, and the idea of tagging humans has thepotential to be a far more sensitive issue. ButCossolotto thinks that, with a proper marketing andeducation campaign, these concerns can be allayed."The word 'tracking' is a misnomer," he says. "It'snot like a GPS device, you need close proximity to ascanner to read the chip. And if you don't want it, aminor incision can remove it."Cossolotto concludes by reiterating that medical usesof VeriChip are still under review by the FDA, butthat some adopters have moved ahead regardless."People are free to buy it and 'get chipped,' as wecall it," he says. For now, though, such adopters willhave to wait for the FDA and for the widescaleadoption of RFID technology by hospitals in order toget the full benefit of their implant.
