Guest guest
Well, my Listee friends and all: Day before yesterday, on July 9, 2003, I had the honor to meet the world's oldest known person. His " family " (five generations under one roof!) says he is 133 of age, but the government certificate/s say he is 125 of age. The government gives him pension after his retirement from the job. Blind, but teeth and hearing intact. Not dependent on others. Has sense of humor. Moves around and does his own self-care. Memory on superficial judgment is intact. He lives about 20 minute walk from my house here in Jaipur (Rajasthan), India, 300 km south-west of Delhi. Let me know if anybody has any questions for him. He has invited me to visit him again. He and family are very poor, so bring your own chairs to sit yourself as the " family " can provide only one or two small chairs. He said the only " addiction " he has is ...........hold your breath.........TEA!!! Sanysin Bev, you hear me?!!! When I asked him howmany cups? He disappointed me, saying: " One cup in the morning, one in the evening " . But he cheered me up when he added: " When anybody visits me, I take an extra cup with him " . I could see that when he asked for tea for me thereby hinting to his " family " (his wife died long ago) that he would also take a cup. Lean body, bearded, name is Habib Mia. Used to do " Namaz " five times daily until 10 years ago. Past 10 years, has a rosarie (spelling?) and silently chants " Allah's " name. Please don't entertain the idea of studying him " scientifically " like taking him to hospital, taking out his blood etc.. He has NEVER been to a hospital. Well, vitamins? His grandson asked me " What are vitamins? " . Remember when you re-locate a plant, you have to dig it up with its roots and then try it in the new location and there it may or may not survive. Human system is more complex than plant's, that too after 125/133 years. His " roots " are the five generations of humans, their sounds, their smells, their touch. Don't uproot him, he will die. So, no hospital please and no poking of needles. I plan to test his memory systematically. Any questions? Ratan the pigmy of 62 in age. Guest guest
He is educated in a traditional Islamic " Madarasa " or school. He is very poor. Remember his background when you ask me to ask him questions. But this is not to be-little him. Don't under-rate him. I did ask him the question " why and how he has lived so long " . My exact wordings were " What is the secret of his long life? " He said in reply that the television staff had come to him and asked him " Will you like to live or die? " To which he replied in an Urdu verse wordings of which I don't remember. But I remember the gist of his reply and the same reply he advanced to me, and that was: " Unless invited, I would not go to even Allah (God)! " Meaning thereby that it is the God's wish that he is living. My understanding is that he doesn't have an answer. But isn't this an answer by itself, namely, that you stop caring and desiring life or death---leaving these to the nature's forces? I recall that terminal stage cancer patients who survived by means of meditation alone were the ones who had developed such a philosophical attitude to life. Ratan.
