Congressman Burton has been the autism community's biggest voice in Congress after witnessing first hand the tragic effects of mercury in vaccines. His grandson, Christian, became autistic shortly after receiving seven vaccines that contained Thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative used in multi-dose-vial immunizations. "This is our way of giving something back," says Jo Pike, mother of a vaccine-injured child and coordinator of the event scheduled for May 3rd at the Hilton Palmer House in Chicago. "It will honor a true hero while raising money for Dr. Mark Geier, a brilliant researcher and physician who continues to prove a link between Thimerosal and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism." The event itself is appropriately named "Rebel with a Cause" and guests are asked to appear in 50's and 60's wear for kicks. "It's all going to be in good fun," says Pike. She went on to note that parody performances by Bob Marley, The Blues Brothers, and Simon and Garfunkel will serve as laugh-your-troubles-away entertainment, especially when members of well-known autism organizations break out their mics and old-style dance moves. A Senator Frist look-a-like will even be there to add to the humor and, as one parent noted, he'll probably just end up getting in everyone's way.
