Guest guest
I’ve known quite a few people who home school. In the beginning, there are just books to buy. You could buy a computer as a teaching tool, but, you and your relationship with your child is the primary teaching tool. Actually this is how things are created. Parents are intended to nurture (teach) their children. From their coming out to the time that they go to school, you’ve been the primary teacher. They are being given your value system, your milieu around the home, your independence, your diet and nutrition, etc.etc. All of these are learning experiences. Children want to learn off their parents. The job done at the public school systems falls into a framework, really, of separating parents and children. Look at the philosophy of education promoted by John Dewey; one of the big names in American public education. The book “A Common Faith” of his especially. John D Rockefeller, also a major name in the development of education had the stated goal of turning the schools into a foundational system of establishing good employees that “do what they are told.” As a member of health and healing, I’m reasonably sure that you know what the results are of doing what you are told by the experts. The experts would seem to have their own best interests at heart rather than yours. The schools represent a faith common to America. Problem with that is that the particular faith does not represent the individual rights that are supposed to be secured by government, but rather the rights of a society that ir headed and ran by the government. So the public schools do not, for the most part, turn out good leaders. They are very good at turning out dumbed down people. People that can learn a technology, or a technique to earn a living with while working for somebody else. And who will accept the crumbs offered as if that is all there is to life. If you want your children to learn to be leaders, if only in their own families, homeschool them, at least for a few years. Home schooled children have a better chance to be leaders because, after all, they learned from a leading parent. You are a leading parent when you teach your child to teach for themselves. And they are going to more readily learn how to think for themselves through the medium of their parents than the public school. The public school has a vast amount of resources compared to the home school. But they don’t teach children how to think. And so the vast amount of material coming out of schools, end up actually being unable to learn correctly later on when they need to learn. Teach a child how to think, and they can learn anything that they choose. And when they know how to think, they will make good value judgments about what they need to learn. What you would do as a home school, does not require you to have all the resources that the public school has. Don’t be afraid of that. And in some states, and counties, by law they have to share some of those resources with you if you so desire. Remember you already have the 5-6 years of teaching experience done. Your child learned the language from you, to a certain degree. The main functions. The school’s job, to some degree, is stated to be to separate the child from the parent. Part of that reason is so that the child no longer wishes to learn from the parent. The reason for that is that the parent’s world and life view may not be conducive to the main purposes of the public educational system. Very often when the public system fails this is exactly the reason. But that is often not a slight on the parent, merely a statement of what the public educational system is. Its designed to fit the children into the public. No thinking permitted that goes against the grain of the public. Witness the Patriot Act which, ultimately, is a restatement of exactly that. The government leads, your child does not, you do not. No disagreements allowed. Welcome to the results of the last 100 years of the public educational system. This is what we are fighting. Guest guest
A lot of times I will see in the paper results of a spelling bee, geography bee, or whatever – and usually the winner will be a home-schooled child. Interesting….. I’ve also just read about un-school – I guess that’s different than home school. I’m too old for all this anyway, but I am going to recommend it for my grandkids. Carol -----Original Message----- Ed Siceloff [siceloff] Thursday, August 14, 2003 10:37 AM RE: Carol//Re: Doctors Call for Universal Health Insurance I’ve known quite a few people who home school. Guest guest
I also believe that if I own property and pay taxes on it I should be able to vote on who will decide how those taxes will be spent and should be able to vote on any bond issues and teachers salary whether or not I am a resident of the city limits. In other words I should have a voice in who will represent me and my taxes. Jim Payne - luckypig Wednesday, August 13, 2003 10:21 AM Carol//Re: Doctors Call for Universal Health Insurance I pay taxes to support schools, and I don't have children, that does not seem fair to me either. If you have kids, you pay, why should I. L - Carol Minnick Wednesday, August 13, 2003 1:16 PM RE: Doctors Call for Universal Health Insurance I don’t understand how it can be “more fair”. That would mean that I – who hasn’t been to the doctor in 25 years because I take care of myself – would have to pay for the health insurance of someone who, for instance, smokes and drinks and eats at McDonald’s & Krispy Kreme every day, and has all kinds of degenerative diseases.
