Bush Visited Veterans While His Administration Does Nothing To Alleviate Health Care Crisis, Tried To Sneak In A Pay Cut For Troops In Iraq. On August 26, President Bush spoke to veterans in St. Louis. What he didn't tell them was that his administration has done nothing while at least 230,000 veterans are being forced to wait over six months for their initial visit to a doctor at the Veterans Administration (VA). In some parts of the country veterans are waiting nearly two years for those visits. Bush has proposed increasing prescription drugs costs for veterans, and a new $250 enrollment fee in their health plan. A day before Bush spoke, his Veterans Administration announced it was closing hospitals in Canandaigua, New York; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Highland Drive); Lexington, Kentucky (Leestown); Brecksville, Ohio; Gulfport, Mississippi; Livermore, California; and Waco, Texas. In early August, the Bush Pentagon tried to cut the pay of troops serving in Iraq -- and stipends for their families -- by refusing to support a renewal of hazard pay increases passed by a bipartisan Congress in April. After pressure from Democrats, the Pentagon backed down from that plan.
