Guest guest
Efficient Chewing for that Healthy Look Look at this quote from the textbook, Oral Physiology, by O’Rourke and Miner: "Greater attention to the teeth would do much to reduce the incidence of cancer of the stomach . . . it would greatly reduce the incidence of gastritis and gastric and duodenal ulcer as well as carcinoma of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, and stomach." Clearly, chewing food correctly and well is a serious matter. A practical experiment for you: We’re creatures of habit, programmed and really are not aware of how we chew. Try this: At your next meal, see if you chew most of your meal on the right side of your mouth or the left. Zero in your attention to see if you favor one side or the other. Naturally, we should chew on both sides equally. But many of us don’t. Why? If there’s some subtle problem on one side, we unconsciously avoid that area. If you do find yourself eating mostly on one side, there could be a problem with the bite, an open contact between the teeth that catches food - food impaction, or one of many other difficulties. By the way, this causes the muscles of your face to have good tone on one side -- and sag on the other. This can register poorly on your appearance.
