I have been hearing that teflon is bad for you and I would like to get rid of all my teflon pans and buy some stainless steel. I found some called cook's essentials Stainless Steel. It has a stainless steel body and an encapsulated, heavy gauge aluminum, impact-bonded base. The durable, arc-sprayed DuPont ScratchGuard interior is metal utensil-safe and warranted to release food for the pan's lifetime. Is the aluminum in it bad also what is the scratchGuard? Does anyone have any ideas on the safeness of it?ThanksCathy

Why don't you just go down and buy some Lodge brand

cast iron pans? They'll last a lifetime and you

probably need the iron!

Judy (they have them most places that sell camping

supplies - even amazon.com)

I can tell you we love ours. Some say cast iorn causes too much iron to get into your blood and on and on it goes until if you listen to everything others say there is nothing left to cook with nor anything that is safe to eat.

From what I can tell cooks essentials is made by Caphalon and is commercial grade. The warranty should say something for it. I have some old cookware that used the old non stick stuff and it has come off in places. We no longer use it to cook with but for things like letting frozen food thaw out. Cooks essentials is two kinds available. The stainless steel with non stick which I prefer and the aluminum with non stick. We have some of both. Both well made and wonderful to work with..

In cooks essentials the aluminum is a separate later bonded on the bottom and does not in any way come in contact with food unless you were to turn it over and cook on the bottom side somehow. It is no way resembles any of the old type aluminum cookware of the past. There are to make it clear two layers of metal. A pan within a pan if you will. cast iron can shatter and break if you do not handle carefully and sooner or later will chip the enamel on your sink. yes I have some but seldom use it. cast iron is great for cornbread cooking. It just does something different for the flavor. cast iron has it;s place in a kitchen but a would hate to cook with it exclusively. Cooking is my big thing and I try for the healthiest ingredients and healthiest way of preparing foods. But in this endeavor one must remain practical or one soon finds things too much trouble. We live in a society that often has time limits when it comes to meals. In the old days when a wife was home all day and had the time to prepare the time consuming meals many of the things cast iron was used for was of no consequence . The time was there. Now those that prepare the meals have the limited time to cook as I said and even more so the time to wash pots and pans afterwards. Something that can be put in a dishwasher and come out clean is what a busy household depends on. I know many will not share these feelings and I understand why. One must choose at what point one considers something unhealthy. For me it looks like the cooks essentials line offers diet safety and the time convenience of preparing meals.. Another drawback of cast iron pans and pots is that they could not be washed but wiped out. Or they have to be re seasoned. So if you do not wash them out what gets into your food? Will it make you sick? I will take my chances elsewhere for the most part.

Yes, Aluminum is bad when it comes into contact with food. However, the

encapsulated disk in the bottom of some stainless steel pots and pans (Revere

Ware is one example) helps to spread the heat evenly across the bottom of the

pan for more even heating. It does not come into contact with the food because

it is completely encapsulated within stainless steel -- and poses no problem

whatsoever. It also eliminates the cleaning problem with copper bottoms on other

Revere ware pans.
