Help! Swollen hands

My brother, a teacher at the local community college, has had swollen hands

all week this week. His hands are all puffy, noticeably bigger than usual,

kind of red looking and when he bends his fingers they feel " tight. "

 

To me, it looks like he's retaining water in his hands. It started Sunday,

it was just his hands that day but by Monday his feet had swollen up some,

too.

 

It's not going down much in his hands at night. I'm worried about him but

our family doctor is on vacation and won't be back until next week so he's

going to wait until then to seek medical attention.

 

What do you all think? Is it wise to wait? Have any idea what could be

causing this??

 

The only thing he's doing different this week that he wasn't doing before is

that he started taking Vitamin E. I read that Vitamin E should not be taken

if you have liver problems and Jon had hepatitis years ago so could it be

the Vitamin E? He's stopped taking it but the swelling hasn't gone down

yet.
