Drug-Resistant Bacteria Spreads Through France

PARIS -- A strain of bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics has

infected 112 people in French hospitals since this summer and killed 18

people, health authorities said Wednesday. \\

The infection rate has slowed, but cases continue to emerge. Twenty-one

hospitals or other health care facilities have reported finding the

bacterium, acinetobacter baumannii, the General Direction of Health said.

The elderly and people in intensive care are considered the most vulnerable.

" What really alerted us is that we were confronting a bacterium that we know

and that we have never seen to have such a level of resistance to

antibiotics, " Gilles Brucker, head of the Health Surveillance Institute,

said at a news conference.

Some 35 cases of the infection were reported in August and September, but

the level dropped to about 12 cases in November, Brucker said.

The infections occurred in the regions of Nord, Pas-de-Calais, the Aisne,

Ardennes and the Marne.
