Perfect Pill for Women

Scientists have developed an pill that solves two of women’s biggest

problems: it's an oral contraceptive that helps you lose weight. This is

great news, since most women gain weight while taking the Pill. College

student Gina Patterson says, " It's supposed to be a weight-loss pill, but

also a birth control pill at the same time. "

" On a standard birth control pill, I think the average woman might expect to

gain a pound or two. On Yasmin, I think the average woman might expect to

lose a pound or two, " says gynecologist Dr. Bob Barbieri. Yasmin uses a

different form of the hormone progestin that acts as a diuretic, eliminating

excess sodium and water from your body. You don’t lose fat, but you do avoid

the bloating problem that’s common with many birth control pills.

Despite the fact that Yasmin is being touted as a weight-loss pill, as well

as a birth control pill, Dr. Marie Foegh, of Berlex (the company that makes

it) says, " Yasmin is an oral contraceptive and should not be viewed as a

weight loss pill. We would not want any woman to think of it as that. "

Nurse Leah McKinnon-Howe says news about Yasmin is spreading by

“word-of-mouth from student to student. You know, one person may be on it,

says, 'Gee I didn't gain any weight with this pill.' They'll tell their

friend, they'll come in and think this may be the pill for me. "

But it’s not the magic weight-loss pill we’ve all been waiting for. Many

women who lost weight on Yasmin gained it all back (same old story).

Barbieri says, " For the woman who claimed that she gained 10 or 20 pounds

when she took an ordinary pill, I think that woman should definitely think

about trying Yasmin if she wanted to continue on a birth control pill. For a

woman who is on a pill who feels perfectly fine, I would urge that person to

continue using that pill if they continue to need contraceptive protection. "

We may not be able to lose the weight we’d like to, but Joseph Chilton

Pearce says we can transform our physical bodies in order to become more

spiritual beings in “The Biology of Transcendence,”
