Belgium rejects application for gen-mod canola crop BRUSSELS (AP) — The Belgian government rejected a biotech company's application to grow a genetically modified canola in Europe.

The government decided Monday that the rapeseed, or canola, developed by Germany's Bayer CropScience, risked mixing with conventional crops through pollination presenting problems for farmers wishing to avoid use of genetically modified organisms.

Bayer had applied, through Belgium, for a license to grow the genetically modified oilseed throughout the European Union, which is considering relaxing a six-year moratorium on the authorization of new GMOs.

While welcoming the decision to reject the growing of the biotech crop, environmentalists were disappointed that Belgium approved Bayer's request to import and process the product, and agreed to forward that request to other governments for EU-wide approval.

"It is inconsistent to ban the growing of GM oilseed rape, yet allow it for import into Europe," said Clare Oxborrow of Friends of the Earth.

Health Ministry spokesman Karim Ibourki said the imported oilseed rape would be used for fuel, not for human or animal consumption.

An official at Bayer's Belgian office said the company was waiting to hear more details of the government decision before issuing a reaction
