Guest guest
---B complex vitamins, a large group of water-soluble substances that includes vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), biotin, choline, carnitine, folic acid, inositol, and para-aminobenzoic acid. The B complex vitamins are essential in breaking down carbohydrates into glucose to provide energy, for breaking down fats and proteins, for normal functioning of the nervous system, for maintenance of muscle tone in the stomach and intestinal tract, and for the health of skin, hair, eyes, mouth, and liver. They are found in brewer's yeast, liver, whole-grain cereals, nuts, eggs, meats, fish, and vegetables and are produced by the intestinal bacteria. Maintaining milk-free diets or taking antibiotics may destroy these bacteria. Symptoms of vitamin B deficiency include nervousness, depression, insomnia, nerve problems, anemia, hair loss, acne or other skin disorders, and excessive cholesterol in the blood. hope this helps karl ------------------------ Excerpted from Mosby's Medical Encyclopedia Copyright © 1994-5, 1996, 1997 The Learning Company Inc.
