The campaigntargets the nations 77 million baby boomers, individuals born between1946 and 1964. By 2030, when the entire baby boom generation is over65, the number of Americans with Alzheimers is projected to increase70 percent, with an estimated 7.7 million people affected.More than 100,000 persons are estimated to have Alzheimers disease inthe Chapters service area of Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucieand Okeechobee counties. In Florida, one person in four withAlzheimers disease lives in Southeast Florida. The Associationestimates 4.5 million people have Alzheimers nationwide.Closer to home, one person in 50 in the United States with Alzheimersdisease lives in Southeast Florida, and so many of us are familiarwith its devastating effects, said Betty Floris, CEO of the AlzheimersAssociation, Southeast Florida Chapter. "This new national campaign ispivotal. For the first time, its "maintain your brain" message willhelp educate all that leading a healthy lifestyle is our best weaponfor prolonging the effects of Alzheimer's as we age.She said the Alzheimers Associations Medical and Scientific AdvisoryCouncil cited increasing evidence that managing blood pressure,cholesterol, blood sugar levels, and body weight contribute tohealthier aging and may also decrease an individuals risk forAlzheimers.Until a cure is found, there are measures individuals can take to helpharness and slow the progression of this disease, and there is helpavailable immediately through our 24-hour Helpline, 800.272.3900,Floris continued.Sue Keeling, director of the Alzheimer's Association's Adult DayCenter, said "At the Delray Beach Adult Day Center, our "maintain yourbrain" programs help keep Alzheimer's patients active and engaged,while allowing the caregiver to enjoy respite time during the day. However, I would really like to see what they are feeding them – their bodies are on toxic overload, and nobody has a clue.
