An important part of this discipline is yogic breathing, or"Pranayama". Prana means life force, and yama means discipline, orcontrol. Pranayama is control of the breath, from the obvious to themost complex levels. With permission from the author I have posted thearticle below for your reading pleasure.Warm regards,Lisahttp://inhalesuccess.com---------------------------Art of Correct Breathing & Healthy Life by Isidora Domnica Mendisan Many doctors in India now consider Pranayama as a preventativediscipline for the onset of serious diseases. And breathing techniquesnot only control acute despair and depression, but also address otherstress induced neurological and physical ailments. Most medical problems today are triggered or aggravated by stress. Whileit is easy to be a victim of stress, kicking the stress habit mayrequire some effort. The path of least resistance is to take stressrelievers--drugs that are freely sold over the counter and generouslyrecommended by general practitioners as antidotes for depression, tension and ailments like ulcer, asthma, cholesterol in the arteries andcancer. Drugs however, treat the symptoms and not the root cause of theproblem. The new wonder drug that goes deep inside your body to wrest out allthat is tensed and strained is PRANAYAMA. This is not a generic name ofa new medicine - but a series of yogic breathing exercises to help buildthat cheerful body-mind relationship, first by de-stressing the mind andthen by freeing the body of its ailments.Dr. Vinod Kochupillai, professor and Head of Medical Oncology at Delhi'spremium All India Institute of Medical Sciences, says that Pranayamaworks wonders for the human body, ridding it of all depressive energyand body tensions. Dr. Kochupillai is one of India's best known cancerspecialists. But she is equally well known as an art of living teacherand says that correct breathing can prevent most ailments. In fact, thanks to her, many doctors are coming to believe that Pranayama canprevent the onset of serious ailments. "In this process we aretransported to our very source - called the pure consciousness. Once oneis in a state of pure consciousness, day-to-day worries and tensionsdisappear and the body begins to heal," says Dr. Kochupillai."When one is going through a stressful situation, the whole physiology;the brain and endocrine system, is influenced negatively. The breathingtechniques of Pranayama establish a positive body-mind relationship.Removal of negative thoughts and tensions leads to a positive andhealthy physiology."Pranayama is the most ancient yogic breathing technique. It involvestaking in deep breaths to regulate and direct one's internal energy."With regular Pranayama, a lot of body, mind and emotional activitiesstart getting harmonized. The endocrine system and brain waves also getsynchronized", says Dr. Kochupillai, who besides being one of the topcancer specialists of the country is an expert in yogic breathingtechniques. CLINICAL STUDIESThe popularity of this form of breathing has swelled in the past fewyears. Researchers and users are testifying to its healing values. Arecent study done by Dr. Richard R. Brown of Columbia University hasconcluded that people who practice deep breathing are better equipped todeal with depression, eating disorders and obesity than other forms ofmedicine.Several departments at AIIMS have been independently researching peoplewho practice these breathing techniques. The Neurology Departmentchecked the Electro-Encephalography [EEG] of people who deep breathewith the EEG of people who did not do these breathing exercises.Interestingly, more beta waves were recorded in the practitioners doingthe breathing techniques, thus curing depression. At the Endocrinology Department, blood cortisol---a hormone related tostress--- of two groups of people were examined. Those who practiced theyogic breathing exercises had a more calm state of mind. The ImmunologyDepartment noted presence of high levels of natural killer cells tofight diseases in people who performed deep breathing exercisesregularly."Natural killer cells provide immunity to the body from diseases as theydestroy infected and harmful cells in the body," says Dr. S.N. Das,Associate Professor, Immunology, and AIIMS. However, what was mostsignificant, according to Dr. Das, was the considerable increase in thenatural killer cells in the cancer patients after they had beenpracticing Pranayama for even a short period of time. That people who regularly practiced Pranayama were more tranquil wasconfirmed by the Biochemistry Department of AIIMS. The Department ofBiochemistry selected two sets of subjects for their study, yogapractitioners and police trainees. Blood samples of both the group weretaken after a period of strenuous exercises. Normally blood lactatelevels tend to rise after a demanding exercise regimen such as joggingand running. In this case however, blood lactate in the Pranayamapractitioners went down and rose in the case of cops, as happensnormally. However, after the cops were trained to do the Pranayama, blood lactate levels began to get depressed. Reduction in blood lactatelevels is a sign of a peaceful mind on high mental alert.BANISHING DEPRESSION.Another study undertaken by Dr. D.B.N. Gangadhar at the NationalInstitute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences [NIMHANS] Bangalore, foundPranayama working wonders for depression and alcohol slaves. Dr.Gangadhar was able to manage acute cases of depression through the useof Pranayama. Of his 46 chronically depressed patients, 26 showed highlyimproved mental states and reduced incidence of melancholy at the end ofa three-month trial period.Dr. A Vedamurthachar of NIMHANS tried the technique with alcoholics. Hediscovered that Pranayama considerably lessened the depression andtension among 30 alcoholics attempting to kick the habit. From theneurological point of view then, breathing techniques not only controlacute despair but also address other stress induced neurologicalailments." Yogic breathing exercises prevent stress-related neurologicaldisorders like tension headaches, non epileptic seizures and sleepingdisorders," says Dr. Manvir Bhatia, associate professor at theDepartment of Neurology, AIIMS. "Of all headaches, the share of tensionheadache is 70 percent. This accrues mainly due to stress at office orhome," continues Dr. Bhatia.Non-epileptic seizures, unlike real epilepsy, are often stress-related.They trouble youngsters appearing for their board exams. They are seenin women victims of marital conflict. They attack men who are seriouslythreatened at work or dissatisfied with their work profile. These andseveral sleep disorders like insomnia or impaired sleep have beensuccessfully managed through these yogic breathing exercises. For Dr. B.S. Sharma, Professor of Neuro Surgery at AIIMS the yogicbreathing exercises are good also because they help to increaseconcentration level and prevent behavioral disorders.Dr. Bhatia insists that for a permanent remedy for all stress inducedneurological disorders, anti depressant drugs or sedatives or even mildpainkillers are not the answer. It is the mind relaxing yogic techniquessuch as Pranayama that help release internal hormones in the body thatin turn prevent stress and its accompanying disorders.Having successfully challenged depressive problems, the cardiologydepartment at the Bangalore Medical College decided to transfer thisknowledge into their study of the heart. Fall in cholesterol level inthe arteries of patients who adopted regular Pranayama programmessuggested that the concept would be of immense use to heart patients. While ancient and new yogic cures are not part of the medicalcurriculum, Dr. Bhatia feels very strongly that these must be introducedin the course. "Once doctors understand about breathing techniques theywill prefer to recommend them as antidotes rather than relying blindlyon drugs".For real change, both the breathing techniques need to be practiceddaily for 30 minutes preferably early in the morning when one has afresh, stress-free mind. "Commitment of the patient is extremelyimportant if these breathing techniques have to show results," feels Dr.Sharma.Flagging the need for regularity in doing the exercises, Dr. NeetaSingh, Professor of Biochemistry at AIIMS says, "These exercises must bedone regularly. Police trainees who stopped the exercises after thestudy was over, had blood lactate levels rise again after having droppedduring the exercise regimen. Discussions with them indicated that theywere no longer feeling comfortable and could feel the inner tension".So are these breathing techniques the full and final answer to ourstress induced health problems? "No exercise can guarantee completecure. After all every one has to die one day. But certainly people whodo these exercises regularly lead a healthier life with a better mentalstate leading to better physical health" says Dr. Kochupillai. The message of all the leading doctors is clear.
