This doctor seems to contradict himself –

first he says that he recommends high

doses of isolated nutrients (in this case, vitamins C and E), but then he says

most nutrients in nature occur together.

So my question would be why wouldn’t he

recommend getting vitamins from the nutrients naturally occurring

in foods, instead of all the isolated stuff.  There’s

an “interdependency factor” that means

nothing is found alone in nature.  You can’t

find anything that has “just” vitamin C in it – except something

that is man-made.  He must have stock in

some vitamin company, to be recommending

such high doses.  I don’t

understand how doctors could NOT know how very unbalanced a

vitamin C pill is – after all, all it is is ascorbic acid, which is only one part of the real Vitamin

C, which has nine parts to it – you end up with a chemical imbalance.  So what happens when you take synthetic

Vitamin C?  Your body will take minerals, enzymes and

protein (the interdependency factor) from inside your bones, your tissues and

your organs, to process this unbalanced

vitamin.  Your body doesn’t

recognize this “one part” of the synthetic vitamin C as a food, and

it needs to be digested somehow, so

your body takes all that other stuff (from body parts that need it) to do its job.

How then, do you account for the hundreds of thousands of studies and the tons of research, showing that these "individual" nutrients, properly administered, in well designed trials, have helped millions of people for well over half a century? The effects of Vit. C or E, for example, couldn't be better documented, and are as dramatic as they can be. People with hi cholesterol, are helped tremendously by using the isolated Vitamin we all know as Niacin, and it's so obviously effective, that even cardiologists routinely administer it to their patients, with clearly positive results, which have been documented repeatedly. You speak of Vitamin C, as if their's no evidence of its effectiveness, in spite of the fact, that Dr. Linus Pauling devoted his life to the study and prescription of this vitamin to the entire planet. The effects of C, in isolation, are manifestly overwhelming, and have been saving lives for decades.

What you're talking about, are people that use "vitamin" pills in isolation from a well designed diet. We're talking about "supplements," to a good diet. Without good eating habits, these isolated nutrients will have diminishing value, until finally, in the absence of any sensible eating habits, they're probably useless. But taken in conjunction with intelligent eating, these vitamins can be enormously valuable. The problem with using so-called whole foods to achieve the results we all seek, is that it's not that simple. There are problems in the soil, in the genetics of the seed, in the storage, refrigeration and maintenance of these foods, in the quality of farming, with fertilizers, pesticides, with foods that are devitalized, etc. But there are also problems with the human metabolism. Many people cannot digest huge amounts of the foods you talk about, however much they eat them; and require enzymes, provided in the form of "pills." They may not be able to absorb the nutrients you refer to, and require taking them in very substantial amounts in pill form. There are many reasons why people take vitamins, and most of them make good sense, and are supported by scientific evidence.
