Guest guest
Hi Josh, Well, it's a very broad question, actually. Personally, I had a great experience at Emperors. I made some great friends, learned cool stuff, and had an opportunity to apply those things in the College Clinic and at a couple of different externship sites in the community. ECTOM is a great U.S. acupuncture school. As far as strengths, I would say the Clinical experience was very valuable. It is a fairly busy clinic so interns don't have any trouble getting patients. It's well-run and quite professional. Also, there are some really good clinical supervisors, each with their own teaching and practice style. The classroom instruction is good too. I had the opportunity to take a class at another local (L.A.) school and was convinced that the ECTOM experience is far better. ECTOM did get a very good review for it's most recent accreditation. Another very special thing about ECTOM is the overall environment. The students are very friendly and their is ample opportunity to build strong relationships which is important since you'll be there for 4 years. This is another big difference from other schools which are a bit more " commuter " in their feel. Also, you can't beat the location, far better than being in downtown L.A. where other schools are located. As far as weaknesses...my personal 2 cents here is that the weaknesses of ECTOM are probably the weaknesses you'll find at most U.S. acupuncture schools. The overall rigor of the curriculum in some areas is not as high as I would've liked. I did learn a lot, but I think that what you come out with at graduation time is the bare minimum to build a practice (without hurting people). As far as acupuncture as a profession, you have to be commited to continuing your education well after graduation. Also, you will have to rely on your business sense/networking abilities in order to make a living practicing what you've learned.
