Usually the dream is a symbol of something that needs to be done, and has not yet been done. > and so I'm experiencing the after effects of a toxic > dump of chemicals This is possible. Just write them down every morning, but don't attempt to analize them with your conscious mind. Wait one month before going back to the dream. And then look at it from that new position in time. Sometimes the results amaze you. > I'm not looking for help breaking this state, I can handle that. What > I want to know is what mechanism is at work. Anyone have any ideas? Sure, You had the dream when you were in an altered state of mind. So use " state dependent learning " rules to give you the intention of that dream. Here's how you do that. Using self-hypnosis, put yourself back into that altered state of mind WITH THE INTENTION of remembering that dream and knowing what the dream actually means in a way that you can understand. Be sure to have a micro-recorder in hand as you do it so you can dialogue with your unconscious mind " as if " you are talking with your unconscious parts. While in state say to yourself, " I had a dream XXX. I don't know what it meant. I want to know what it means in a way I can understand. So I am going to count from 1-3 and on the count of three the answer will come to me in a way I can understand. 1...2... 3...(snap your fingers) I am now able to visualize, sense, know, imagine the meaning of dream XXX in a way I can understand. Now, just start talking into the tape recorder, saying any and every thing that comes to mind. There is much more you can do but this is a fairly workable, simple solution. Have fun.
