The Goat is a teaching tool used to propel the learning process of

students in a group setting. The trainer chooses an individual to be

the Goat, usually a student who is making mistakes with the material

being taught. The Goat becomes the butt of jokes and some ridicule, so

it's important that the trainer choose someone with the emotional

wearwithall to handle what's being thrown the Goat's way.

 

The object is not to ridicule, however. It is to motivate the group

away from complacency so that they do not want to be the Goat and want

to get the teachings right. Sometimes it takes seeing things done the

wrong way, to truly point the class in the right direction.

 

The irony is that experienced students (at least at LaTourrette's

Seminars) want to be the Goat at least part of the time. The Goat gets

to learn a lot from the trainer in a very personal manner. His mistakes

get highlighted. His course gets a personal correction.
