Hey Orna,

It's a pleasure.

You know, the other day I was having fun colouring things in with my

friends' three-and-a-half-year-old daughter.

She's such a sweet kid, totally loveable, happy all the time and just

fearless. Just doesn't care. So we're sat at the kitchen table with

paper and pens and I'm showing her how to draw things.

We were drawing rockets to start with, so I showed her to do the body

and the fins and the fiery tail out the back. She has a go and just

scribbles a bunch of mess on the paper. And she starts giggling. And

I'm laughing, so I show her again. And we repeat this about a hundred

times, but we're both having so much fun, we don't care.

And suddenly I think to myself, 'you know, right now you're totally

loved and valued just because you're alive. You don't have to do

anything, don't have to earn any money, nothing. And you're going to

grow up one day and be an adult, but still, somewhere inside, you'll

be that sweet, valuable child that everyone loves just for being who

she is. It'll never change.'

And I thought was cool, because, whatever she does, no matter how she

behaves, her parents will always love her, and I think I will too.

Like I was talking to this client of mine the other day. She has some

problems in that she's very self-critical. Thinks she's only worth

something if she's thin, pretty, smart and perfect. If she doesn't

measure up, she goes inside and criticise the hell out of herself in

bad tonality.

So I said, 'were you never a foetus?'

She looks at me like I'm insane, which does happen a lot. I said,

'Look, think about abortion. Why is that even an issue? I mean, you

believe that you, and by extension everything else, only have value if

you're thin, pretty, smart and perfect.'

'Now how thin, pretty, smart and perfect is your typical foetus? Not

at all, I would say. A foetus hasn't done anything, doesn't have

anything, hasn't been anything, so it has no value right?'

And she's going 'No no no, a foetus has value, you can't just kill it.'

I said, 'oh, so you're telling me that a foetus has value just because

it's alive?'

She says 'Uh huh.'

I say, 'Right, so were you ever a foetus? Of course you were. And that

means you had value just by virtue of being a human. So when did that

change?'

She says, 'It didn't.'

And that's the thing see. No matter what you do, what you have or what

you become, you still have inherent value as a human being, above and

beyond all your 'mistakes'.

And you don't have to read 'Psychocybernetics' by Maxwell Maltz, or

'Transform Yourself' by Steve Andreas or 'Using Your Brain For a

Change' by Richard Bandler to know that.

You don't have to stand in front of a mirror, close your eyes, think

of a time when someone said something that really made you feel good

about yourself, squeeze your fingers together, open your eyes, look

directly at you in the mirror, squeeze those fingers together several

times rapidly until that feeling reaches a powerful peak and then tap

your third eye either.

You can just remember that who you are and what you do are different

things and that if one isn't perfect yet, doesn't mean the other can't be.

Just my thoughts,

Phil
