And I think that is what Sandy is pointing out. By the way, " alturism " is one of the major types of energy vampire. Why is that so? I seem to remember Ayn Rand writing that altruism was a form of sacrifice without any compensation - a form of giving for no reason other than pity. She made me realise just how awful the emotion " pity " really is, and how I should substitute it for more constructive emotions. Now, I don't know the answer to your question, Doc, and I'm looking forward to learning. All I know is that I believe (and it's only a belief) that when giving, you should have a clear idea of your PURPOSE (it may be as simple as wanting to give of yourself to the world) and WHAT FOR (random gifts to charities that you have no clue about can be counter-productive). And for pity to be there, what else MUST be there? Besides judgement? Besides being better than? Besides, blab, blab, blab? And for altruism to be a positive force, what is necessary to be there? And, as far as I know, I've only met one or two people that have those positive traits of altruism. > > She made me realise just how awful the emotion " pity " really is, and how I > should substitute it for more constructive emotions. > > Now, I don't know the answer to your question, Doc, and I'm looking forward > to learning. > > All I know is that I believe (and it's only a belief) that when giving, you > should have a clear idea of your PURPOSE (it may be as simple as wanting to > give of yourself to the world) and WHAT FOR (random gifts to charities that > you have no clue about can be counter-productive). > > Paddy >

For me when I think of a tramp (vagrant, Bum etc)in the street, I feel pity, I also feel guilt. Guilt of having more than that person. I never consciously thought about that before - thanks Doc, something I can now easily tap out. - several rounds of tapping later - aah that's much better :> (Yes I did actually tap before typing further). I walked past one yesterday, doing the usual looking down at the floor, cup in hand, a typical pose to get people to give money by feeling sorry for them. Anyway I walked within 6 feet of him and felt a black heaviness, I had to mentally clap it away and then Zip up before it took hold. How many people did he negatively affect yesterday? Must have been thoasands, this was near London Bridge (in Central London), so it has a load of tourists and office workers going past him very regularly. > > Besides judgement? > > Besides being better than? > > Besides, blab, blab, blab? > > And for altruism to be a positive force, what is necessary to be > there? Mmmm, at a guess I would say, keeping in mind what would be the best way for the person to evolve and move forward in life, so that they are empowered. Just like that Hot dog storey where Donna gave the guy a workable method to energise his food. Guest guest
- > And for pity to be there, what else MUST be there? ... Hmm... Let's run this backwards. Supposition: A person who deliberately seeks to make others feel pity for him does so as a manipulative tool. From that point of view, then, for pity to exist, I've come up with four points, all of which I believe must apply, and fifth point, which applies to some people and not others: 1. The pitier perceives the pitied as suffering misfortune. 2. The pitier believes that he can do something, however small, to alleviate the situation. 3. The pitier feels guilt or duty (obligation) about the situation. 4. The pitier is NOT responsible for the situation. 5. The pitier perceives the pitied as a victim (i.e. not at fault) of the circumstance. Now, I don't know that I've got this right. As I said in the earlier email, I'm posting this in order to learn. > And for altruism to be a positive force, what is necessary to be > there? Passion. The giving must come from a genuine desire to give part of yourself to the world. You do so not because you feel obliged or guilty, but rather because you feel a passion for that particular area. For example, you, Doc, give willingly, passionately and with energy to people on this list, because you have a passion for these types of topics. You love to give VALUE. You love to SHARE. (Most altruism doesn't involve sharing.) If you were to give, say, to " the homeless " through a charity, I guess that you would check out the charity first - that you would want to be sure, within reason, that the charity would spend your money well. I think - I suspect - that most altruism comes from a point of guilt, not passion, hence random giving to charities based on advertising. How did I do?
