haven't treated it myself yet, but here is how I see this problem:

- Fire problem, reaches mouth via ST channel, maybe also LI (Yang Ming)

- Vacuity of Blood (and Qi) so tendons are not nourished

- leading to internal Wind

I'd just treat the pattern(s) that you see in this person.

Tom.

Grinding teeth

Hi.

I have a new patient coming tomorrow which main complaint is grinding his

teeth while asleep.

I don't have any more information about him at the moment since I haven't

seen him yet, so will know about all the rest and pulse and tongue tomorrow

but was wondering if anyone could let me know how they would consider this

in TCM terms and if they had any success in treating it.

Thanks

May

May,

It usually manifests within the pattern of Lover Qi Stganation, so using Liv

3 and P6 works well. I would also use Ren 24 and Si19 (both sides).

Results are usually very good.

Kind regards

Dermot

Although very apt i'll bet you wont find " Lover Qi stagnation " in the Wiseman

although personally I think it should be added!

  • 3 years later...

I consulted an EFT practitioner who also used some EM techniques (such as,

she corrected for reversal before doing EFT), and after some good drills,

asked her whether she knew any drills to stop me grinding my teeth in my

sleep. She said no, but she would like to because she does it too.

Unfortunately this side effect of anxiety causes significant tooth damage.

Working on my own I discovered that it is hard for us tooth grinders to tell

when our jaw is tense. But if you tell yourself " relax the tongue " you can

immediately feel the difference. If you make the whole tongue relax and go

soft, you will usually find that more saliva starts running. Manual face

massage also helps to relax the face and jaw.

The strongest technique is to rub four acupuncture points simultaneously.

Two are right in front of the ears, just under the ridge of the cheek bone

on the " hinge " of the jaw. These relax the mandibular joint.

Two more are on the top of the chin bone chin, under the bottom gums and

just outside your front teeth.

To massage four points simultaneously use two index fingers on the jaw joint

points, and two little fingers on the chin points. Just rub gently for a

minute. When you take your fingers away your face will go soft and it will

feel like you have had a couple of cocktails. This is how people without

anxiety feel. You can do this as often as you need to, and right before

going to sleep, and if you wake up.

There are two more points above the upper gum line (either side of the

bottom of the nose and just outside the front teeth) which correspond to the

chin points. These are fun too, as they make the upper lip area relax.

If you can't find the points ask me for a diagram and I will scan and send

it in a couple of days.

I think this is just symptomatic treatment; next I am going to remove the

causes of anxiety with the thought field

techniques in EM.

Hi Kit,

Those are great facial relaxation points to know. I would be

interested to see the exact upper lip point. I think I have found it.

Thanks for sending them when you can.

Donna told us another set of points for TMJ. I find after doing this-

I can't clench my jaw at all! (It's not for just all moments in the

day because one finger goes inside the mouth.) Press the spot at the

end of the jaw from the outside and reach back inside and press in,

pinching the skin of the cheek back there with two index fingers or

thumb and index of one hand.

Isn't it wonderful to have so many tools~
