Guest guest
Montel Williams had a show about anorexic youngsters today. Most were pretty young - around 12-13. I listened to a good part of the show until near the end. One boy set off my alarms. He has his family by the balls and I could feel the manipulation. When he was offered treatment (inpatient) his reaction seemed a bit off, too. I don't know if he accepted it or not. That does not mean he is not troubled. It is more a comment on how he is approaching his troubles. One of my first thoughts was that I wish he could be with Doc for a month or two. I'll bet that could make a big difference. Guest guest
actually, doc doesn't strike me as one who would give a manipulative kid who's indifferent to the idea of making change the time of day, much less waste a couple months time on him. i perceive doc as one who prefers to work with people who are willing to make a commitment to their improvement and who will follow directions and invest themselves in the drills that will bring about their desired change. that doesn't sound like the kid on montel's show... like many, he seems, as you describe him, to have found a sense of power in his disease and until he shifts that, even in-patient treatment is likely to have little effect. - alan , " M J Nelson " <zpp4everyone wrote: > > Montel Williams had a show about anorexic youngsters today. Guest guest
I didn't see the show. However, anorexia is a truly perplexing problem. I realize you weren't suggesting that this young boy who appeared to be using anorexia for manipulation was not representative of the whole. It would be nice if this problem was that simple. I've listened to interviews with young anorexic females. Hearing them talk about how fat they are while looking at their truly emaciated bodies only proves to me how much " the mind is the builder. " Although fortunately not anorexic, as a teen I avoided having pictures taken because I felt I was too fat. Now years later when I look at those few pictures that did get taken, I wonder why I felt that way. I also wonder just how many other supposed " realities " are limiting me now. I agree with your thoughts that Doc could probably work wonders with this young man. Hopefully someday we'll live in a more enlightened world in which these energy therapies are no longer considered " alternative " with a snicker. I was also surprised to see this announcement online: " NEW YORK (AP) — Syndicated talk show host Montel Williams is being replaced by a younger version of himself. CBS Television Distribution announced Wednesday that " The Montel Williams Show " will cease production after this television season, his 17th on the air. " I wonder what Silvia Brown will use for a platform now. He certainly catapulted her to fame. barb(bbtried)
Guest guest
I saw that show too. I thought the same thing when he seemed like he didn't want treatment but I think he was scared as he would have to leave his family. I know it would be scary at that age but I know if it was me I would do what I had to do to get help. And the sad part is they really don't care if they die or not. I don't know what they do when they are in rehab but I do think the stuff like Doc. teaches would be more beneficial and helpful. Guest guest
My sense of what he was doing when Montel asked him about the treatment was that he was looking at the audience response to his response to the question, crying with his head lowered and looking out. I am not saying all the others on that show were similarly manipulative. Kids do know when they have gained power. Just look at the show The Nanny and you might get a sense of how some very young children completely rule the roost. Maybe Doc would not even be willing to work with this boy. Since he is not a licensed therapist he is unlikely to be asked. Too bad for the kid. Unless a therapist handles the manipulation successfully almost any therapeutic methodologies will probably be minimally fruitful.
