Guest guest
(The step-by-step sequences of my holiday might bore some people who want to know what was on the menu or how many people were there and what everybody was wearing and what we all talked about, but for those of you who study this post, you just might find some real useful materials. The story below is neither " right " nor " wrong " . It's just " what is " and how I used it to get what is meaningful FOR ME while also spending time with people I appreciate.) It is interesting to observe the elements and also the other Meta Programs people use. We went to my aunt and uncle's to have New Year's dinner with them and my cousin and her husband and two of their " kids " . I knew I wasn't going to get stuff done while I was there and I decided to just " roll with whatever happens " (water element). But I ALSO want to get stuff done, so I set up projects to work ahead of time so I could " get something done " while I was there. (Wood) I also like and appreciate my aunt and uncle, and they are in their 80's. I used to be really close to my cousin years ago growing up, but we don't see each other much anymore. I just figured out a way to use that as a resource I had forgotten I have, so IF I go back and use that resource using the proper steps, I suppose that would be a metal element trait. My cousin is fun, and her two adult daughters that were there are hot and one of them is a lot of fun. Since I don't know what the " old goat element " is, I'll say " fire element " for " wow they're fun to be around " instead of " fire " for " damn, they're hot... " Anyway, it was fun to notice which people spoke up and took up most of the conversation, but then when the topic changed, people who were mostly passive the entire time became " self-oriented " and wanted to go on and on with their story, and were more difficult to interrupt even though they had been more introverted and content to let everyone else control the conversation a few minutes earlier. (Yes, I know introverted / extroverted is a different MP than self / others oriented. It was interesting how the two were mixed together, depending on the topic of conversation.) So reflecting on and recalling and cataloging the details is a metal element trait? The food was good, but since I had FUN eating it, and also since I showed restraint, I'll say that was NOT water element. I'll get to the water element (which I promptly murdered as soon as I recognized it) in a minute... Anyway, my aunt is old and she wanted to hear me play her piano. Piano is NOT like riding a bike. Sure there are people who are " naturals " but it's a hand-eye coordination skill. It takes practice, and when I do it, I like to do it CORRECTLY. (not just the notes, but also the emotional content. " Mechanically correct " would be metal element, but there's more to it than just the technical skill.) So when my aunt wanted me to play her piano, I went inside and said to myself " Oh shit! I'll make mistakes and screw it up. I don't want to look stupid in front of everybody. " (Fear and water element.) Then the damned EARTH element kicked in, and I said to myself " My aunt is 84 years old, and this might be the last time I get to see her. She wants to hear me play the piano, and it would be nice to play with her (she plays piano and organ and other instruments), and it might be the last time I get to do this, and it will make her happy. " So to keep the damn EARTH element from giving me hell, I went to the bathroom, did uptime awareness drill and revified the state of playing correctly (even though you got to have the hand / eye coordination drills to be really good at it), and revified it so it would be " good enough " . Wood element. Plus, wood element that I was PISSED at myself as soon as I recognized I went in to water element with fear and self pity about " I'll screw it up in front of everybody, " and there was no way in hell I was going to let that one slide by... So I did break state and accessed confidence AND competency from a previous time when I could do that skill well, and I did it in a context of " good enough without practicing " so I planned ahead of time what songs I would do and which ones I would avoid (because I only wanted to do what was good enough - " good enough " again being wood, and desire for quality being metal). Then when I sat down at the piano and my aunt sat down at the organ, I went inside again and said, " Wow! This might be the last time I ever get to do this with her again. I want this on video so I can save it and remember it forever. " That one was probably earth element? Then my mom turned the damn camera on me, and I went " Oh shit! I hope I don't f*** up on camera! " and I recognized that S.O.B. water element again and quickly broke state and went in to state of appreciation for my aunt and for the chance to do something with her that she likes, enjoys and appreciates, and I again accessed the state and physiology of competency and skill in that area. (I also conveniently avoided songs I knew were more difficult. SO I " Picked my battles, " so to speak, to stack the deck in my favor, just to make sure I would win. Never fight someone else's battles on their terms. Pick your battles, and only when you know you're going to win.) I suppose that is metal? Then when I finished, I filmed my mom and aunt playing on the piano and organ so I would have video of my mom and aunt together. Probably earth element there. Then I went out in the kitchen where my cousin was cleaning up the dishes that were too big to put in the dish washer. I felt sorry for her cleaning up all by herself after she was the one who FIXED everything in the first place. So I felt sorry for her. That was earth element, right? Then I switched from " feeling sorry " to feeling APPRECIATION for the incredible food she fixed for us. Probably a wood trait there? THEN once I started to feel that appreciation kick in, I ALSO felt a sense of duty to help her out. Metal element there? And then I asked her what I could do to help. She said " Nothing. I'm just washing up the dishes. " Well it wasn't fair. (damn earth element, or possibly wood element, depending on how it's framed?) And I kind of " FELT BEHIND THE LINES " instead of " reading behind the lines " and I looked for a towel, didn't see one, and so I decided to do something. I said " Well what do you use to dry these with? I'll dry them. " Once I started to dry the dishes, my sense of appreciation for my cousin's hard work started to grow and increase, and I also felt the rapport between us growing. Nobody else was bothering to help her, and she worked her butt off on that dinner. Her state and mood started to change too, as I was helping her, and she started to feel like it wasn't all up to her. (Or at least that's my " mind read " of what was going on. I did notice the energy between us changing as I was helping her, although like I said MY energy changed as I took action to do something to show my appreciation.) Now if I had gone back in to earth element, I would have left the video camera there, or put it on top of the car and forgotten about it until we were miles down the highway, but fortunately I " murdered " my damn water element back at the piano when it tried to f*ck me up while I was doing a good job. There are other Meta Programs in the story I didn't bother to spell out in detail. Fun for someone who wants to get some great practice at learning an awesome skill. So what Meta Programs did you operate on during the holidays? Sincerely, Jim P.S.
